The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School
The famous Urdu and Persian poet-philosopher and lyricist of the unofficial national anthem, ‘Sare jahan se achchha hindustan hamara’, Sir Mohammad Iqbal had a romantic affair with Atiya Faizi, an attractive and intelligent young woman from an aristocratic Muslim family of Bombay, whom he first met in Cambridge at a dinner table on April 1, 1907. Gradually, they started meeting more and more frequently and developed strong emotional attachments. After her return to India one year later, Iqbal sent many poems to her; one of those was ‘Wisal’ (Communion), of which one couplet read thus:
When I heard your melody I invariably blushed Like mercury, my heart was in constant flux Unfortunately, forced by his elders, Iqbal was compelled to marry a girl named Karim Bibi, 19, when he was only 16. In one of his letters to Atiya, Iqbal says: “My life is extremely miserable. They forced my wife upon me.” Talking to TSI, Prof Abdus Sattar Dalvi says “Iqbal’s married life was not pleasurable at all.”
Iqbal married two other women, but never found marital bliss.
Atiya was the only one to whom he expressed his inner feelings and exposed his burning soul. Unfortunately, he could never marry her, which is intriguing.
Atiya repeatedly invited him to her hometown Jangeera, but he never turned up. She accused him of indifference and hypocrisy. She blamed Indian traditions and said: “Iqbal is not in India what he had been in Europe.”
Despite all this, sometimes Iqbal too wanted to let break free from the drudgery, as he says in this couplet: Laazim hai dil ke paas rahe pasban-e-aql Lekin kabhi kabhi ise tanha bhi chhor de (It is necessaary to keep the heart under the guard of wisdom, but sometimes the heart needs to be left alone).
