We have a situation where helpless teachers who have absolutely no protection from anybody are targeted, while ministers' themselves live in barricaded houses because they've been threatened by militants." Taking advantage of the situation, groups inimical to the state, meanwhile, burnt the tricolour and copies of the Constitution at various places.
And just where does a situation such as this leave the students, the new generation, of Manipur? Said N Champu, a school student: "Our parents talk about times when they would leave early in the morning to watch the Republic Day function…But these days there is always a bandh on such days. And we can't watch it on television because there are power cuts every day." For S Ghandhi, a kid still in kindergarten, it evokes a chuckle. "What is Republic Day?" he asks.
