Vageesh Saraswat, vice president of the Maharastra Navnirman Sena (MNS), tells TSI’s Vimalendu Kumar Singh that the violent outburst against north Indians is spontaneous
MNS has been violently targeting North Indians. Who is responsible?
The Centre and the state government.
Is violence the only way out?
Laloo Yadav came to Mumbai. The MNS approached him to hold a dialogue. But he refused. Now you tell me who is responsible. Is it because of Laloo’s refusal to hold talks that north Indian students have been targeted.?
You tell me what can we do?
Why is the issue hotting up like this?
MNS and Raj Thackeray have never opposed North Indians, either in the past or the present. This whole issue is a question of political grandstanding, the attempt to use worship and religion to do dadagiri and to save ourselves from the cultural imperialism that is being sought to be imposed upon us.
What does Raj Thackeray want?
He wants that everyone who lives in Maharashtra should respect the culture, rights, and sanctities of the Marathas. But sadly, a different kind of culture is becoming dominant here.
MNS talks of removing Article 370 from the Constitution, but it is creating a situation akin to Kashmir, where outsiders are not welcome. Kashmir is a national and international issue. MNS would like to talk about Maharashtra only. Raj Thackeray neither wants to become a national leader nor does MNS aspire to become a national party. When we are restricting ourselves within the boundaries of Maharashtra, then our first duty and priority is to keep the state’s interests upper most in our minds and that can only be done if we do not ignore the rights of the sons of soil. Those who you call outsiders in Mumbai, they too claim to be sons of the soil here.
Ordinarly, there are debates as to who is a son of the soil or `bhoomiputras’. Everyone has his own defination. Just like anyone is free to go any where, so is he free to think what he likes.
Who is a bhoomiputra according to Raj Thackeray?
His own thinking on the matter is only this that anyone who lives in Maharashtra, who believes in the soil here, who has his heart here, he is a Maratha. As long as he stops believing that he belongs to some other state or province.
How would MNS react if Marathis are targeted in other parts of the country just as north Indians are being hit in Mumbai and elsewhere?
Our radars are not on north Indians. We are targeting those who are opposed to Maharashtra. Mumbai only has a fixed capacity to take outsiders. The crowd is getting too big for anyone to handle. This city cannot take it any more. The big problem here is a number of locals have been deprived of jobs here and those are being filled up by outsiders. And they are very angry.
The only fault of those north Indians being targetted is the place of their origin.
Just take these activities as a spontaneous reaction to what has been going on here. Problem is the local people have been very angry for years. Whenever an agitation comes along, it gives an oppurtunity for the people to take out their frustrations.
The chhath is important in Mumbai. There are many Maharashtrian festivals that are held in other parts of the country. Is it to suggest that Tilak, Ganapati and Shivaji going to be confined only to Maharashtra?
There is no question of politics in the conduct of festivals for poliitical purposes. Why do you forget Garba? People come, dance and celebrate for ten days and go back.
No one says that Gujarat has been captured, now it is the turn of Maharashtra. We have never nor ever will oppose chhath. But to do politicking and muscle flexing on the Juhu beach is going to be opposed.
