Without a shadow of doubt, Mumbai will burn if the loud speakers are used to match the provocative language used by MNS activists. Extremists on both sides are itching for a confrontation. If that happens, the riots unleashed recently by MNS and Shiv Sena activists will look like a harmless school picnic.
The transformation of Chhath from a purely religious affair to one potent with communal violence can be traced to the identity politics in Mumbai. By the late 1980s, north Indians had emerged as a powerful vote bank in many parts of the city. The Congress had Krupa Shankar Singh, the Santa Cruz MLA – currently President of Mumbai Congress. The Shiv Sena projected a former journalist, Sanjay Nirupam, as the saffron champion of north Indian interests. Nirupam has since left the Sena and now swears by the Congress and Sonia Gandhi. And he is again ready to defend the right of north Indians to celebrate Chhath. Incidentally, Nirupam is credited with pioneering the mass celebration of Chhath festival at Juhu beach, an annual event that is now more a burlesque carnival than a holy occasion.
Till recently, this lane near Milan subway – from where you can see aircrafts landing and taking off from Santa Cruz airport – was not throbbing with activity. The Jupiter building didn’t have people queuing up for favours. But now that Krupa Shankar Singh has become the Mumbai Congress President, there is a huge crowd of favour seekers lined up outside Jupiter building and the usual police bandobast. The living room of his sixth floor flat is full of admirers, supporters and sundry party types who hang around politicians when the latters' stars are again on the ascendant. Singh speaks Marathi fluently and now faces a cruel dilemma. He owes his political rise to committed north Indian voters. And yet, he condemns Nirupam for turning the Chhath festival into a provocative tamasha (farce). “Chhath is about deep and personal bonding with God. My wife fasts for three days. Why destroy its sanctity by getting dancing girls to perform during the festival?”
