“I sleep well because no one sleeps hungry in Chhattisgarh”

IIPM Ranked No1 B-School in India

Just as Atal Behari Vajpayee was the BJP''s face to come to power at the Centre, Raman Singh is the face that the party sees as retaining power in Chhattisgarh. Various issues are dogging his public image. Singh, however, says he is all set to return for a second term, in an interview with TSI''s Anil Dwivedi

Is your image being hurt by issues related to lack of development?

Some people gripe about that but I am quite clear: the Bharatiya Janata Party will stomp back to power because of our developmental work. You can see that we are contesting the polls precisely on the twin issues of peace and prosperity, that is, developmental work, ushered in by us. As far as my personal image goes, I have always worked as a public servant, and not as a ruler. My doors are open to one and all for all times to come, which is why I am regarded by the people as a good human being.

But Ajit Jogi says the BJP rule under you is tyrannical?

He thinks the way he himself is. People have yet not forgotten the tyranny of the previous regimes under him. It was sheer terror. Casteism ran riot. But we have changed all that. Chhattisgarh was known across the country primarily for its backwardness. Our government has successfully given it a new identity. Today, there is peace and prosperity in the state.

But there are voices within your party who accuse you of rank incompetence.

Yes, there are some one or two such persons who say this, you are right. And they are those who have been denied tickets for the coming elections. They are the handful of rebels. Let me ask them, however, why they remained silent on my so-called incompetence while they were in my government?

Denying tickets to no less than 18 sitting MLAs has created a difficult situation for you as a party leader?

One feels bad denying tickets, but those were decisions taken by the High Command. And they alone have been denied tickets whose image among the people have been tarnished. It was necessary that we bring in new faces to ensure a victory for the second term. In any case, most of the disgruntled persons have been brought back home. In BJP, the organisation is important, not the person, like when I was a minister at the Centre, and was yet sent back to Chhattisgarh to head the organisation here.

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

Iskander-M leaves Poland and Czech vulnerable to Russian attack

It was no accident that Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, announced a fresh missile deployment within hours of Barack Obama's election as US president. It was an attempt to knock the new entrant off the nerve; however, it also underlined Russian position vis-à-vis US design to deploy missile shield in Eastern Europe – Russia’s playground since time immemorial. While it offered the Russian leader a chance to charm the domestic audience who have had enough of western bullying in years when Post-USSR Russia lied low after its cold war defeat; it is equally true that given the Democrats’ indisposition about the missile shield in comparison to the Republican hawks, Russia jumped gun too early this time around.

Over the years, in an endeavour to bolster NATO members in the east of reciprocal security guarantees, the US and other western NATO states have time and again infuriated dormant Russia. However, a blatantly one sided approach of the west on Georgian affair and proof of American provocation of its headstrong President Mikhail Saakashvili, has made Russia come out of its cocoon. Medvedev's military message was also intended to daunt the Poles and the Czechs, who are to host the bases for the Pentagon's silos for 10 ballistic missile interceptor rockets. The missile that has been finalised to be deployed in retaliation in Kaliningrad is Iskander-M.

The location of deployment and choice of the missile both say much about Russia’s position on this current tussle. During the cold war, Kaliningrad was perceived as the first line of defence against an aggression from the west. Russia condensed its strategic presence in the region post Cold War, but it still has tens of thousands of troops and quite a few key bases there, counting the Chernyakhovsk naval air base as well as the Baltic Fleet's headquarters at Baltiysk.

Named after the greatest conquer of all time, Alexander of Macedon, Iskander-M missile system, or SS-26 as NATO would like to call it, will be Russia’s new armoury in the region. “The deployment of Iskander that has a range of more than 300 miles would equip Russia to mark the entire territory of Poland and also parts of the Czech Republic,” said Anatoly Tsyganok, a military expert at Military Forecast Centre, while talking to TSI from Moscow. Iskander launchers are mounted on an eight-wheeled truck, making them extremely manoeuvrable. The missile’s “variable flight trajectory” means it is tricky to knock down. However, it has not been made clear on the Russian part whether the Iskanders to be deployed in Kaliningrad will have a nuclear payload or not.

The religion factor

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

In the land of holy cow, innocence is being milked. Religion has always led to financial greed but it becomes a mockery if 'con' games are played. Certain temples have 'express darshan' for the rich. This not only makes religion a 'bias' but also insults the poor. God has become big business and suddenly the poor are finding out that money can even get you superfast darshans. The meek wait in a line patiently while the rich meet god in a sort of tatkaal form. Religion has become like a deadly game. If the cow can be used, then we have reached the last stage of deceit.

Gag Disorder!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Who said comedies need a script and great punches? If you ask Rohit Shetty, the director of Golmaal Returns, he would tell you to just spoof some already unfunny movies, go to the internet and pick up some age-old one-liners and if it is a sequel, then pay a tribute to the original, and the movie is ready! It seems as if No Entry, Golmaal, Hungama and Welcome amalgamated to produce the disaster called Golmaal Returns.

The story is of K-serial obsessed Kareena Kapoor who suspects her husband when he spends one whole night on a yacht and cooks up a story to save his skin. Add to that a murder mystery, some villains and a dollop of confusion and you have the hotchpotch of a plot ready.

Even if you overlook some technical errors like the dead guy visibly blinking and the hideous and done-to-death scenes, you cannot discount great actors like Arshad Warsi (he laughs even before delivering the dialogues) and Ajay Devgan (he just looks bored) goofing up. Kareena Kapoor is back to her Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai days and overacts to the hilt. Shreyas Talpade does a decent job but one tends to miss the presence of Sharman Joshi who was brilliant the first time around. But the man who steals the show is Tusshar Kapoor in what is probably the role of a lifetime for him where he has been amazingly consistent in both movies.

The movie has nothing original, lacks wit, chemistry and innovative gags. Even if you left your brains at home, you might have a lopsided smile but nothing more than that. And to think that they are coming up with a third sequel… Aarghhh!!!

The Princess,Benazir Bhutto was a ray of hope for all those who cherish a democratic polity in Pakistan.

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

On 16th November, 1988, Benazir Bhutto was elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan in the first ever open elections of the country. Veteran Scribe, Shahid Husain, recalls the life and times of the late premier.

Despite her impulsive behaviour, Benazir Bhutto was a ray of hope for all those who cherish a democratic polity in Pakistan. She braved imprisonment and exile and her charisma attracted the downtrodden and the elite alike. She was no doubt like a princess and went away like a martyr.

I remember when Benazir Bhutto arrived in Pakistan in 1986 after self-exile in Britain, she drew huge crowds in many cities of Pakistan including Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan. The province was traditionally dominated by nationalist Baloch veterans like Nawab Khair Bux Marri, Sardar Ataullah Mengal and Ghous Bux Bizenjo.

When military dictator General Zia-ul-Haq perished in a mysterious air crash on August 17, 1988, along with several top generals and the then US ambassador in Pakistan, Bhutto was the only alternative for a demoralised army. She was also a source of strength for thousands of political activists in Pakistan who were imprisoned, tortured and even flogged by the military dictator who ruled the country for 11 long years through sheer force and demagogy.

There was euphoria in the masses when she again arrived in Pakistan in 1988. Upon hearing the news that Bhutto had swept the elections, I remember common men and women had danced in the streets, distributed sweets and prostrated before God. However, her brother Mir Murtaza Bhutto, who was brutally murdered in a police shoot-out during the second tenure of Bhutto, believed otherwise. He thought Bhutto had made a compromise with the establishment since she agreed that Ghulam Ishaq Khan would continue as president and Sahibzada Yaqub Khan, Foreign Minister during the Zia era, would continue in the same capacity.

I also remember that Bhutto’s stance to ease tension with India was resented by the establishment. There were accusations in the newspapers that Bhutto had passed on secrets to the Indian government regarding Sikh extremists who were allegedly trained in Pakistan. This was nothing new. In 1972, when her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto signed the historic Simla Accord, he was also accused by right-wing parties of compromising on the national interests.

Nirupam has since left the Sena and now swears by the Congress and Sonia Gandhi.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Without a shadow of doubt, Mumbai will burn if the loud speakers are used to match the provocative language used by MNS activists. Extremists on both sides are itching for a confrontation. If that happens, the riots unleashed recently by MNS and Shiv Sena activists will look like a harmless school picnic.

The transformation of Chhath from a purely religious affair to one potent with communal violence can be traced to the identity politics in Mumbai. By the late 1980s, north Indians had emerged as a powerful vote bank in many parts of the city. The Congress had Krupa Shankar Singh, the Santa Cruz MLA – currently President of Mumbai Congress. The Shiv Sena projected a former journalist, Sanjay Nirupam, as the saffron champion of north Indian interests. Nirupam has since left the Sena and now swears by the Congress and Sonia Gandhi. And he is again ready to defend the right of north Indians to celebrate Chhath. Incidentally, Nirupam is credited with pioneering the mass celebration of Chhath festival at Juhu beach, an annual event that is now more a burlesque carnival than a holy occasion.

Till recently, this lane near Milan subway – from where you can see aircrafts landing and taking off from Santa Cruz airport – was not throbbing with activity. The Jupiter building didn’t have people queuing up for favours. But now that Krupa Shankar Singh has become the Mumbai Congress President, there is a huge crowd of favour seekers lined up outside Jupiter building and the usual police bandobast. The living room of his sixth floor flat is full of admirers, supporters and sundry party types who hang around politicians when the latters' stars are again on the ascendant. Singh speaks Marathi fluently and now faces a cruel dilemma. He owes his political rise to committed north Indian voters. And yet, he condemns Nirupam for turning the Chhath festival into a provocative tamasha (farce). “Chhath is about deep and personal bonding with God. My wife fasts for three days. Why destroy its sanctity by getting dancing girls to perform during the festival?”

How difficult was it for you to believe in something that has hitherto not been proven scientifically?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Is it possible that memories of past life could be nothing more than one’s imagination? What is the harshest criticism that has come your way?

As a psychotherapist, I know that imagination does not have a long-term curative effect by itself. I have had patients speaking foreign languages that they have never heard or studied (xenoglossy). I have had patients who have found their families from past lives after therapy sessions in which they recalled specific validational information. Others have known detailed historical facts that they never studied. So it is much more than imagination.

The harshest criticism has come from other psychiatrists who never studied regression therapy, who never tried it with their patients, and who therefore have uninformed opinions. These criticisms were worse in the 1980s and 1990s, but I find less of this resistance now.

How do you cure a person through Past Life Therapy and what is the relation between what you learnt in the university and the therapy you impart?

The concept of Past Life Therapy is very much related to traditional psychotherapy. The recall of emotionally important and often forgotten memories has a healing effect on present day symptoms. Past Life Therapy merely expands the arena beyond childhood and infancy into previous lives. The overall theory and therapeutic skills are the same.

How does Past Life Regression work? How do you think karma affects one’s ‘next’ life?

There is a strong connection between the events in previous lives and the symptoms, talents, and relationships in the present life. Using techniques of hypnotherapy it is not exactly very difficult to remember past lives. About 75% of my patients have been able to access recall of previous lifetimes.

To me karma is not punishment but is an opportunity to learn our lessons. If the lessons have not been learned in a previous lifetime, we come back to work on them. The lessons are about love, compassion, non-violence, patience and understanding, non-prejudice, etc.

Is there continuity of the individual soul? Does the concept of Past Life provide evidence for reincarnation?

There does seem to be a continuity of the individual soul. That is how we learn our lessons here. However, at some higher level, all souls are connected. The concept of Past Life Therapy provides direct evidence for reincarnation since it is the same thing. The soul enters a new body to continue its journey of learning. When the learning is complete, then liberation or moksha is attained.

Why do you think that the Judeo-Christian faiths choose not to believe in reincarnation, or at least it isn’t as popular a notion?

Christian tradition originally contained references to reincarnation. I believe that many of these references were deleted, especially by the Roman authorities, in order to maintain control of the people. In the Jewish religion, the mystical tradition has always embraced reincarnation or transmigration of the soul.

Based on your research, why do you think people have to die? Could we ever choose to be immortal or at least choose where, how and when we die?

We are born into physical bodies in this world, and these bodies age and die. But even though our bodies are temporary, our souls are immortal. So in that sense, we never die because we are never really born. We existed before we came into this body and we will exist after the death of the body.

I think that highly advanced souls do have more control over where, how and when they die, but this is not true for most of us.

“We are merely protecting our Maharashtrian culture”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Vageesh Saraswat, vice president of the Maharastra Navnirman Sena (MNS), tells TSI’s Vimalendu Kumar Singh that the violent outburst against north Indians is spontaneous

MNS has been violently targeting North Indians. Who is responsible?

The Centre and the state government.

Is violence the only way out?

Laloo Yadav came to Mumbai. The MNS approached him to hold a dialogue. But he refused. Now you tell me who is responsible. Is it because of Laloo’s refusal to hold talks that north Indian students have been targeted.?

You tell me what can we do?

Why is the issue hotting up like this?

MNS and Raj Thackeray have never opposed North Indians, either in the past or the present. This whole issue is a question of political grandstanding, the attempt to use worship and religion to do dadagiri and to save ourselves from the cultural imperialism that is being sought to be imposed upon us.

What does Raj Thackeray want?

He wants that everyone who lives in Maharashtra should respect the culture, rights, and sanctities of the Marathas. But sadly, a different kind of culture is becoming dominant here.

MNS talks of removing Article 370 from the Constitution, but it is creating a situation akin to Kashmir, where outsiders are not welcome. Kashmir is a national and international issue. MNS would like to talk about Maharashtra only. Raj Thackeray neither wants to become a national leader nor does MNS aspire to become a national party. When we are restricting ourselves within the boundaries of Maharashtra, then our first duty and priority is to keep the state’s interests upper most in our minds and that can only be done if we do not ignore the rights of the sons of soil. Those who you call outsiders in Mumbai, they too claim to be sons of the soil here.

Ordinarly, there are debates as to who is a son of the soil or `bhoomiputras’. Everyone has his own defination. Just like anyone is free to go any where, so is he free to think what he likes.

Who is a bhoomiputra according to Raj Thackeray?

His own thinking on the matter is only this that anyone who lives in Maharashtra, who believes in the soil here, who has his heart here, he is a Maratha. As long as he stops believing that he belongs to some other state or province.

How would MNS react if Marathis are targeted in other parts of the country just as north Indians are being hit in Mumbai and elsewhere?

Our radars are not on north Indians. We are targeting those who are opposed to Maharashtra. Mumbai only has a fixed capacity to take outsiders. The crowd is getting too big for anyone to handle. This city cannot take it any more. The big problem here is a number of locals have been deprived of jobs here and those are being filled up by outsiders. And they are very angry.

The only fault of those north Indians being targetted is the place of their origin.

Just take these activities as a spontaneous reaction to what has been going on here. Problem is the local people have been very angry for years. Whenever an agitation comes along, it gives an oppurtunity for the people to take out their frustrations.

The chhath is important in Mumbai. There are many Maharashtrian festivals that are held in other parts of the country. Is it to suggest that Tilak, Ganapati and Shivaji going to be confined only to Maharashtra?

There is no question of politics in the conduct of festivals for poliitical purposes. Why do you forget Garba? People come, dance and celebrate for ten days and go back.

No one says that Gujarat has been captured, now it is the turn of Maharashtra. We have never nor ever will oppose chhath. But to do politicking and muscle flexing on the Juhu beach is going to be opposed.

Court slams inhuman practice

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

State asked to keep sewers running but not by humans!

They are the 'dirty' people who keep our cities clean, and it is not uncommon to see them creeping out from the gutters like rats splashed with grime and goo. What is even more common is the recurring news of these people, the city's sewage system cleaners, ending up dead.

Not surprisingly, the Madras High Court came crashing down over this abysmal and inhuman treatment, and ordered that these men should no longer be allowed entry into manholes. The court's division bench (corum: justices AK Ganguly and FM Kalifullah Khan) issued this order in response to a public interest litigation by A Narayanan of PAADAM (People Against Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Merchandise) an NGO. Narayanan told TSI: "The average life of these people is only 45 years, mired in either liquor or sewage. Is this the life which our Constitution guarantees? Now, after the judgement, other states are also thinking of bringing in such an ordinance."

But doubting Toms snigger about the ruling's practicability. The very next day after the judgement, newspapers reported that another such person died of inhaling poisonous gas from the pit. Now the judges saw red, admonishing the government to take immediate remedial measures.

Chennai Municipal Corporation's sewage control and water supply wing, in their reply to the court, has said that at times it becomes very difficult to avoid using humans for such works. They are pleading that sewage workers should be allowed entry into manholes after wearing protective gears. But R Adhiyaman, president, Adi Tamilar Peravai (ATP), an association of the Arunthathiyar community people, who are traditionally into operations like this, will hear nothing of this. "On an average, around 10 people die every month in Tamilnadu, because of this," he fumes. He adds: "The government is not paying any compensation to the victim's families, as most of them are only casual laborers, so it must immediately take steps to address this issue."

P Sampath, convenor of Tamilnadu Untouchability Eradication Front, says, "In these days of scientific advancements, we can do so many things to avoid this, and that is what must be done."

Chennai alone has around 80, 000 manholes and around 4,000 people are involved in cleaning them. The ATP has now decided to launch an agitation against this inhuman practice on December 10, World Human Rights Day. Chief Minister MKarunanidhi had in the 1970s banned hand-pulled rickshaws. Question is: will he show his 'human' face once again?

“Despite suffering injuries, he came back after a few minutes of treatment to face the bowlers”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

It was way back in 1989, during my first year of Ranji trophy. Karnataka was pitched against Bombay in the quarterfinals of the Wills trophy played at Patiala. Both Anil Kumble and I, we were making our debut together for Karnataka that year. We grappled with excitement on hearing the big names that we came across. On the eve of the match, we heard two names – Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli who were making waves in junior cricket. Both displayed glimpses of their talent, suggesting they were special players. Six months down, I watched Sachin being baptised into test cricket. He received a mighty blow on the head by fearsome Waqar Younis. At an age when teenagers grapple with academics and enjoy a carefree life, here was a 17-year-old Maharastrian, negotiating hard cricket balls at a speed of 150 kmph and above. But what drew attention was the way he came back after a few minutes of treatment, to face the bowlers with guts and determination. The very act of coming back to bat was the mark of a true champion cricketer in the making.

It was not only a pleasure but a great learning experience to have played alongside the little master. I always wondered how he has managed all the adulation and hype and kept his head firmly on his shoulders. Having shared the dressing room with him for many years and having observed him in close quarters, I can only infer that his middle class values have been his inner strength. In any discussion that involves family and family values, he reveres his parents and adores his siblings. Sachin's brother Ajit has been a major influence both on his personal and cricketing life. Whatever may be the advice or counseling he got from his brother but to accept his brother as a mentor and respect his words speaks volumes about his value practices.

As a player, Sachin's connection to the game is so deep that he can exercise control on most aspects of the game. Be it batting or bowling, his ability to mimic and understand the nuances comes naturally to him. Bowling in the nets, I sometimes wondered how he was able to pick the line and length so quickly to have enough time for the strokes. Sachin's simple explanations was: "More than the line, picking length is the key. For the balls pitched up, one has to be on the front foot and for the one pitched short batsmen should be on the back foot". This statement seems very basic and obvious but he spoke what he was able to do consistently. Many players have grown up hearing such lines but have found it hard to practice. May be Sachin can see few things earlier than others. But nothing has stopped Sachin to spend hours together at the nets honing his skills. His ever increasing enthusiasm and commitment to practice is what has kept him going for so long. Sachin’s factor is more overwhelming as a player than as a captain. In a way, when the captaincy was handed over to him it seemed as if nothing has changed as he already yielded enough influence on the team and its players. Sachin record numbers needs to be celebrated with gail and gaiety. But one must a take moment to realise the amount of sweat, blood and the toil that has gone into the making of those runs. While estimating the effort levels to reach such a milestone, let's not forget to understand the mental attrition he has gone along with the physical exhaustion. Carrying the hopes of millions every time he walks on the field, living with the ignominy of defeats at times, the taunts from the press and the peer pressure in the dressing room can be quite a force to deal with. But the pleasure of raising the bat after an hundred and the ecstatic state after wining games is worth the pain that he has gone through. Sachin is a rare phenomenon. Let’s rejoice the rest of his cricket as long as it lasts. I would be the last one to ask him to retire.

It's just a bloody bullfight!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

US rose, we did. US fell, we're crumbling too! We paid no heed to warnings by a Nobel Laureate (Krugman) and now we're paying the price for it. Gyanendra Kashyap notes...

The ecstasy and enthusiasm of being an influential part of the stock market have 'all' come to a crashing halt! And why so? Well, in just the past two months, there have been some incredibly deplorable 'free-falling acts' across the globe, thereby, at best, reducing hopes of many millions to nought, and stripping many investors thereby granting them the crown of penury, at worst! For Dow Jones, Nikkei, BSE, Hang Sang et al, RED is the colour for the moment; be it retail investors or institutional investors. So who's the real culprit? Call it ‘global meltdown.’

Governments across the globe have been adopting measures to find their ways round the crisis trap, yet no respite is in the offing, and for once, market pundits, critics and doomsayers are unanimously forecasting that the 'worst' is yet to come. Post 2001, the US economy (the major concern as of now) grew aggressively and markets worldwide took the good news in their stride, growing, keeping the American Dream on the foreground. And this is precisely the reason why the multi-billion dollar bailout packages, economic stimulus grant, aggressive interest rate cuts et al have wounded all global markets. Globally, investors are worried about the stability of the largest economy while living in the fear that there are more bad news to come even for their respective economies, the volatile phase that stock exchanges worldwide are going through being the living proof. It is not a new phenomena though, this volatility of markets. However, what stuns one is the frequency and the amplitude of fall..

The likes of Wall Street and Dalal Street have been teetering on the brink of panic for the last couple of months, vulnerable to any bad news (most importantly the one which emanates from the US). The anniversary of the stock market peak has turned into one of the darkest days in the history of Wall Street. Defying all efforts to stave off the current turmoil, the Dow Jones plummeted by 679 points on October 9, 2008, alone and the average crashed below the 9000 level for the first time in five years, vapourising $872 billion worth of investments; now that was bound to give birth to some major rounds of panic in First World economies!

The nuclear deal marks a paradigm shift in the manner in which US looks at India today

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

N-Deal - Bush most pro-Indian prez ever

Though it has not given us any military leverage, what it has done is to get 45 countries to tacitly acknowledge that India is and shall remain a nuclear weapons power, irrespective of whatever reservations one may have.

One should be clear about the limits of India’s relationship with the US. India will become its closer partner but not a military ally. It is not wise of us to be anybody’s allies. We should keep our options open because what you are seeing in the present world order is that countries differ with other countries on some issues, they cooperate with each others on some issues. US and China may differ on several issues but they are cooperating with regard to North Korea. US and Russia may differ on issues but they are cooperating on issues of terrorism. Today’s world is one of multiple alignments; you align with different countries on different issues. There is no across the board military alliance or open alliances which could suit India’s interests. On climate change, we have to work with China, on WTO we have to work with China because our permanent interests are more with China than US. It is a world not exclusively of rivalries, but of both cooperation and competition.

That the end of the sanctions came about primarily because George Bush has turned out to the most India-friendly President we have seen. We should be clear that India could not have got such a deal if Bush had not been the President of the US. Unlike past US Presidents, who had focused their attention on forcing India to ‘cap, roll back and eliminate its nuclear weapons programme’, Bush has turned out to be the first US President who finds that US’ complementarities of interest is so much with India that India’s nuclear weapons programme should not come in the way. In some ways it could be an asset to US’s interests. This has been strengthened by the fact that there is a great deal of instability in our neighbourhood. On our West, Afghanistan and Pakistan have become epicenters of global terrorism. To our east, countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar are hardly stable. And in the Indian Ocean region, where Somalia is becoming dysfunctional and Ethiopia is unstable, India is seen as constituting an essential partner for stability and economic growth. So really, it is US looking at India differently and seeing India as a rising power.

The Chinese behaviour at the NSG have only confirmed suspicions that China is uncomfortable with India emerging as an independent power, respected in Asia and the world. They have tried their best to contain India, providing nuclear weapons, missiles and conventional weapons to Pakistan. They have tried to surround us with bases and facilities and there was disinclination on part of the Indian elite to recognise that China did not wish to treat us an equal but as one of their vassal states. I hope realisation has now sunk in the minds of our elite. China will deal with you with respect, as an equal, only when your economic power grows, your military power grows and you become a factor that can match them and challenge them as a nation.
