B&E: Though at this point of time, 2009 looks uncertain, there are several arguments to support the fact that the New Year would continue to see positive growth for consumer durables segment. What’s your take on that? WN: While the world has entered certain economic challenges, growth in the Indian economy and demand for consumer goods continue to rise, and is further bolstered by the diversity and steadfastness of the Indian consumer market. Decreases in raw material and operating costs, coupled with the 4% cut in value-added taxes (CENVAT), allow consumer durables manufacturers such as LG to pass on savings to customers, thus allowing for more aggressive pricing strategies and general affordability of white goods.
