What others are saying, gives it his own magical spin to make it a global success?

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Gulzar

“For me, the wonderful thing is that a small film, embracing reality, at a grassroot, human level, (sans glamour), has resonated so big with the Oscar jury and people in the West! Also, it was high time the brilliant Rahman got his due beyond our shores.”

Aruna Vasudev

“The Oscars is about monster ground – swell, showbiz and full-on drama! It is easily, the greatest and most watched show on earth. However, all this does not necessarily make it the most discriminating competition. "Slumdog" is a very good film, no question, but…”

Anuja Chauhan

“I think he is awesome and at last (through brilliant- casting) found material to complement his talent.”

Muzzafar Ali“I reckon that Danny Boyle could well have achieved the near impossible – reintroducing Bollywood to themselves! The takeout for Bollywood, I believe, is to introspect and learn from this exercise that small really is big…that’s the way to go if they want their stuff.”

Anuradha Prasad

“I am tempted to believe an Indian director would not have received the same accolades that Boyle did. However, everything considered, I choose to look at it positively, because that’s the only way to move ahead.”

Alyque Padamsee

“Isn’t it disappointing that it took a Richard Attenborough to do the ultimate film on Gandhi and now, a Danny Boyle takes a well worn Bollywood formulae, gives it his own magical spin to make it a global success? I think Bollywood, the pseudocritics, and the so–called, professional screamers should ask themselves one question: Why couldn’t we make films like Gandhi and Slumdog?”

But the vibes from Sun were apparently not too optimistic.

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Having Sun in its kitty would have helped IBM position itself in the high end segment of corporate computing and in the nascent market for cloud computing services. As a matter of fact, IBM would have enjoyed a 65% market share in the Unix-based servers market and about 42% share in the overall server market (addition of 10%). However, IBM was not too happy with the close relationship that Sun shared with its arch rival Oracle and given the kind of market scenario, it would make no sense to pay more to get its hands on an ailing company. But the vibes from Sun were apparently not too optimistic. So what''s in store for Sun with IBM now walking out?

While the big player (read Indian government) is playing the ‘bore-me-to-death wait and watch’ game in the tightly regulated domestic food processing,

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Who’ll move this cheese?

Though, big corporate houses have enhanced their competitiveness in this sector, yet only a few have actually started the process of backward integration to venture into the arena of food processing. In fact, many of them still don’t have any inclination towards setting up a sturdy base with adequate logistics and infrastructure, a necessary condition for the healthy growth and development of the Indian food-processing industry. What’s worse, even players like the Mittals, Godrej, Ambanis and several of their ilks, who are currently feasting on the sizzling hot opportunities offered by the Rs.3.6 trillion Indian food & beverage industry (which is swathed by the brawny recession proof raincoat), have shown no intentions to pay adequate attention to the global market, unless they have a dependable strategic alliance with some global behemoth. For instance, Mahindra Shubhlabh Services Ltd. (MSSL), the agri-business arm of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. has tied up with South Africa’s ‘Capespan’ to export branded fruits (under the MSSL brand name) to South Africa. So, what is really scaring the soul out of players in the Indian food processing industry? The truth is that players in India and overseas look at India as simply a forest of raw materials and agricultural produce and not as an industrial hub for manufacturing as P. L. Kaul, President, All India Food Processor’s Association (AIFPA) regrettingly adds, “Even a multinational like Coca-Cola is also looking at India as merely a sourcing hub for global players, and is in no mood to set up any processing unit here...” Therefore today, when it comes to deriving full-fledged opportunities in the country, the game is simply left to the SMEs, truly depriving the industry of the much-needed investments!

Let’s not bring good ol’ Barack into this!

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Recession tests companies to the hilt, but following some basic principles can help

If you want to learn the tricks of the trade in recession, the first rule of the game is, understand the economic difference between a recession and a depression. They say a recession is when your neighbour loses his job. And a depression is when you lose yours :-). Actually, the same rule applies for companies too! Till the time your competitors are getting rogered, it’s ‘fair play’; the moment the downfall hits you, it’s ‘Barack Obama must go’! But seriously, the National Bureau of Economic Research defines a recession quite succinctly as the time when business activity (a conglomeration of factors like employment, real income and wholesale retail sales) starts to significantly and regularly fall! Generally, if the fall is more than 10%, economists term the extreme recession as depression! At a time when the IMF has forecast that the total hit due to the subprime crisis could well touch the gut wrenching mark of $1 trillion, it’s quite imperative that corporations globally develop strategies not just to survive, but to lead the market and to beat competition!

Tata Motors can hold on to these deposits till July,

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Certainly, Tata Motors is not oblivious to the constraints. And perhaps this is why the company is demanding 70% of the cost of the car (ranging between Rs.70,000 to Rs.140,000 depending upon model) at the time of booking. Even if one supposes that the first one million cars (as planned) are booked at Rs.100,000 (mean of Rs.70,000 & Rs.140,000) as an upfront payment, it would increase the cash reserves of the company by a staggering Rs.100 trillion! What’s more, Tata Motors can hold on to these deposits till July, when it announces the lucky 100,000 customers who will receive the Nano at the announced price points. Out of the remaining 900,000, those who still stick with the company will get 8.5% and 8.75% interest for one-year and two-year waiting respectively. Considering current debt levels, it will be difficult for Tata Motors to take further loans from financial institutions. So the Rs.100 trillion that Tata Motors receives will aid the company’s current liquidity position (remember the $2 billion JLR debt they are having difficulty rolling over?); that too at low interest rates as banks charge 9-11% interest rate. Also, the company is charging Rs.200 for online booking and Rs.300 for manual booking, which would enable it to garner at least Rs.200 million, assuming 1 million bookings in the first batch starting April.

“Why can’t India be ignored?!” Hear it from the horse’s mouth...

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Stanislas De Quercize, CEO, Van Cleef & Arpels in an exclusive interaction with Business & Economy

Van Cleef & Arpels, a Paris-based premium luxury jewellery brand, from the stable of Swiss luxury major – Richemont, is one of those rare brands that have been riding high irrespective of the recession. And despite Cartier and Montblanc (from the same stable Richemont) are fighting their lungs out to beat the slowdown, thankfully, Van Cleef & Arpel, for the quarter ended December 2008, has managed an encouraging growth of 5%. However, Stanislas De Quercize believes that things will worsen further into this year, and has worked out strategies to combat the same. In an exclusive interview with Buisness & Economy, he spoke about the prevailing recession, its impact on the company, and his future plans, both in the current times and in India.

B&E: Being amongst the world’s top fashion proponent in the jewellery segment, how is ‘Van Cleef & Arpels’ taking advantage of the present times? SDC: We are positioned as high-end jewellers. We have a long legacy to talk about and have done jewellery designing for many Hollywood celebrities in the past. Our hand-crafted and hi-tech designs have always given us that needed edge in any situation, and that is what is applicable in today’s market scenario also. We will continue focussing on quality, despite the burden on costs, and the availability of much lower margins during these times of recession...

B&E: But in today’s market, when all other luxury jewellery brands have been affected, do you think such a ‘quality’ edge is enough to survive? SDC: Till now the recession hasn’t affected us because a buyer of Van Cleef & Arpel piece will always belong to the top-end strata of society, and will buy one irrespective of the economic times. I mean, we are positioned in the premium luxury segment, and this segment, whether in Europe or in US, has not been affected much by the meltdown so far. But, yes if the situation gets worse, we will also have to rework our growth strategies and investment plans.

Learning to live with Terror

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Fighting terror can’t be held ransom to vote bank politics, believes Ranjit Bhushan

The spectre of terror, which has haunted India for a better part of the last three decades – first Punjab and then Kashmir, and then onto mainland India – was never brought out more starkly than it was in November 2008 when the deadly attacks in Mumbai were brought home by live media coverage to a disbelieving Indian public.

The sheer audacity and scale of the slaughter and the impotence of the Indian security mechanisms to put deterrents in place until a lot of damage had been done exposed people to their own vulnerabilities as never before.

Have lessons been learnt? More importantly, is there a bipartisan approach on terror attacks? By the looks of it, some more time would pass before such a consensus emerges. While leader of opposition, L. K. Advani, and Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, have traded charges on whose government is more prone to terror attacks – UPA 2004 to 2009 or NDA 1999 to 2004 – it would be safe to say that the Mumbai attacks remain UPA’s Kandhar. There may have been no shameful ministerial escorts for hardened killers as in Kandhar, but the shifting of IPL, which had the potential to be a sporting brand as big as Wimbledon, on grounds that India was unsafe for hosting such events, falls in the same category of ‘crawling when asked to bend’. In other words, there is now no difference between India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

N. Korea's rhetoric is a plea for a better deal, US needn't take it seriously

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

Hot on the Alaskan trail?

Will North Korea give up its nuclear weapons programme, its only bargaining chip, completely? Success in denuclearizing the Korean peninsula largely depends on how US fulfills promises made at the six-party talks. North Korea agreed in principle to end its nuclear weapons programme on September 15, 2005 and rejoin the international non-proliferation treaty in return for energy, economic aid and a US promise not to attack. But US went against its promises and N. Korea retaliated by conducting nuclear tests next year.

Recently, Pyongyang stepped up verbal attacks, saying that it's scrapping all military and political agreements with Seoul and considers itself on the brink of war with the South. “N. Korea makes such rhetoric whenever it perceives threat from the US or S. Korea or its domestic conditions become worse, particularly the economy. North hopes that it might get a better deal...,” says R. Subramaniyan, a doctoral fellow at the Academy of Korean Studies. The US needs to actually call their bluff, rather than paying heed. Even N. Korea knows that one misstep can lead to catastrophe in its own land.

it might just have made a succession planning bungle!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Research has proven it in the past – appointing a family CEO isn’t the best solution during times of trouble! To quote just two such works – the 2004 paper by Villalonga (HBS) & Raphael (Wharton) proved after an analysis of Fortune 500 firms that “when descendants of founders serve as CEOs, firm value is destroyed!” Then there was the 2005 report by Hillier (Leeds) & McColgan (Aberdeen) that revealed how family CEO successions are “almost always followed by dramatic declines in not only stock performance, but dangerously, even in operating results.” Indeed, besides the fact that Toyota has reduced its global sales target for 2009 by more than a million units, and that its losses would continue to mount, forcing it to shut plants in US and cut manpower further, it might just have made a succession planning bungle!

Times will get tougher for all in the industry as even Christian Breitsprecher, Analyst, Sal Oppenheim opines, “The scenario for the industry will only worsen in 2009 & I don’t see the industry making a comeback before end-2009.” The coming weeks will surely test the experience of both leaders and while you still wouldn’t want to complain about the powerless Honda engine or about your broken-down Toyota, do plan to pray; these men would surely need it.

Indian politicians make us proud again; we pay for unused moneys

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Now pay for what you “don’t” eat

Despite the Comptroller and Auditor General’s various frailties, thanks to the agency that media and even our so-called policy makers have come to know about this ignored amount. The government has had to pay Rs.124.54 crores to the World Bank and the ADB as commitment charges. The biggest chunk of this unutilised foreign aid (about 37%) was meant for infrastructure development like the urban road development. This fact is even more evident after scrutinising of the performance of the incumbent UPA government when it comes to construction of roads. Agriculture, environment & forestry, power & sanitation account for a further 30% of the same unutilised foreign aid. Ergo, the underutilised foreign assistance seems ironic given India’s present economic condition (India’s forex reserves have come down by $60 billion in 2007-08. Even the fiscal deficit in the current fiscal has been about 6% of GDP against the planned 2.5%; and of course, the GDP’s paining too). India needs huge investments and in quick time. But lousy government attitude is reflected at both the central and state levels, especially in the ‘planned’ lack of cooperation between them. Paying a penalty during these times should be considered nothing less than a criminal offence. Er, why’re we not surprised that no politician is worried about being accused of a criminal offence?

Nitish Kumar has become Bihar CM after a long fight and wait, he is now campaigning for a second term

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

Miles to go before I...

Those who know Nitish say that it is tough even for those who are closest to him, to understand his next move. A born politician for sure, he neither likes compliments nor complaints. He is an ambitious leader and also an autocrat. On condition of anonymity, a senior JD leader said that it is very very difficult to make Nitish happy. He wants things done and wants them done the way he likes them. Such a strong and staunch approach may be looked down upon, but this has taken his career to the heights that he now enjoys.

After he became the CM of Bihar, Nitish has grown in respect within his party through his well-planned and well executed poltical strategies. There is no other leader in JD who can actually replace him, if the need may arise. His stature can be understood from the fact that during the recently held part meeting, he cut short the speech given by national president and put his point forward. There was no hue and cry. Even the opposition calls him ‘the efficient leader’, even when they criticise him. He also makes sure that none of his opponents are angry with him. He was able to manage the anger of BJP leaders and made sure that his friend Sushil Modi continues to sit on the post of deputy-CM even after there was conflict in Delhi. When he was awarded as the best CM by a channel, he said, “My biggest award is the love of my people... Bihar has changed and would change in the next decade.” He seems to be looking for a second term. Surely he wouldn''t want to exercise patience this time around!

The latest cash infusion has guaranteed Harley Davidson short term working capital; but it surely would need even more for a joyous ride!

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

Why Buffett loves Harley’s b@#es!

And what about the recent receipts? It plans to use the amount to implement its 3-pronged strategy – build a stronger brand, put a leaner cost-structure in place and infuse funds into HDFS. “This offering represents an important step in executing our stated strategy for funding the lending activities of HDFS,” states Tom Bergmann, CFO, Harley-Davidson, to which Christian Breitstrecher, Analyst, Sal Oppenheim adds, “HDFS required urgent funding and the recent investment is a boon for it...” For now, the company has to ensure maximum and quick ROI from any future investments, as it is bound to pay both the investors a high 15% interest on their bonds, scheduled to mature in 2014.

For now though, the biggest worry is that HDFS will require kindness from more multi-million dollar investors in the coming years, to be able to continue providing loans to its consumers. Needless to say, Harley-Davidson’s future depends on it! For now though, Buffett is taking the muscle-bike on a long ride, and he’ll be back five years later; be ready with the cash Mr. Harley!

China in 2006 purchased around 600 missiles from Ukraine;

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

Having said that, if there is a country whose expertise is beyond question in defence equipment, it has to be Ukraine. Being one of the world’s top 10, it netted $750 million through arms exports in 2006. The main exporting market for this nation can be found near its border. China in 2006 purchased around 600 missiles from Ukraine; even US purchased 300 units of rockets and mobile launch systems. In the last five years, Ukraine has increased its arms exports by 6%. Collectively, Ukraine managed to gather $2.5 billion in last four years of arms sales.

Not only as an arms importer but even as arms exporter, China is swiftly becoming one of the world’s largest, most secretive and irresponsible arms traders. Walking on the lines of superpowers, this to-be-super power is injecting weapons within conflict zones. Chinese weapons have helped sustain numerous brutal conflicts in almost all conflict stricken zones like Sudan, Nepal, Myanmar and South Africa. China is reportedly manufacturing highly fatal war-weapons and space weapons, thanks to its technologically advanced manufacturing units like Norinco, AVIC, Chengdu Aircraft Industry, China Aerospace Science & Technology Corporation to name just a few.

The new Tata Motors chief has to be a visionary, no less than Ratan Tata himself

Tata Motors is one of the pillars of the Indian automotive industry; a company with a legacy that is hard to beat. The launch of Tata Indica had made Tata Motors a major automotive brand and is now considered to be a force to reckon with in the automotive industry. The prospective launch of the Nano has stirred a lot of interest in the public and there are a lot of expectations doing the rounds. However, the recent fall in sales has been marked by serious discomfort in the Tata camp and an anecdote of success is the need of the hour. For Tata’s vast empire, even a battalion of leaders may not suffice but we need supermen here.

There are a number of very able and competent managers in the Tata stable that can steer the group into the future. If choice be the ultimate parameter, two stand out – P. M. Telang, a 32-year veteran and Rajiv Dube, the new face of Tata Motors. Telang is presently the Executive Director of Tata Commercial Vehicles and commands a high respect from his peers.

B&E: Though at this point of time, 2009 looks uncertain, there are several arguments to support the fact that the New Year would continue to see positive growth for consumer durables segment. What’s your take on that?
WN: While the world has entered certain economic challenges, growth in the Indian economy and demand for consumer goods continue to rise, and is further bolstered by the diversity and steadfastness of the Indian consumer market. Decreases in raw material and operating costs, coupled with the 4% cut in value-added taxes (CENVAT), allow consumer durables manufacturers such as LG to pass on savings to customers, thus allowing for more aggressive pricing strategies and general affordability of white goods.
