The Maratha leader continues to survive & thrive in Indian politics, despite ill-health and altered political equations
Having secured the top job at the International Cricket Council (ICC), Sharadchandra Govindrao Pawar is back to his favourite sport, politics. With the mid term polls looming large on the horizon, Pawar is busy trying to convince the ruling coalition to refrain from making elections inevitable. Although, he fully supports the Indo-US nuclear deal, he considers the stability of UPA Government more important in the current scenario. Presently, Pawar is analysing the pitch – keeping all his options open – waiting for the coin to be tossed up. He will probably join the combination depending on the direction, in which the political winds are likely to blow. So the Congress, BJP & the Third Front will all vie to woo the veteran politician.
Much like the other Maratha legend Sachin Tendulkar, Sharad Pawar too had started his career at a young age and showed tremendous promise to perform at the highest level. He headed the State Youth Congress at 24; entered the State Cabinet at 29 & in 1978, when he was just 38, he created a record of sorts by becoming the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He continued to perform with élan on the political wicket & became the CM for the fourth time in March 1993. In 1991, when Congress regained power, he was one of the top contenders for the post of Prime Minster. However, he was pitted at the post by Narasimha Rao and had to contend with defence portfolio only. He came back with a vengeance to occupy the centre stage by becoming the Leader of the Congress Party in Lok Sabha. However, the fluctuating political fortunes of the Congress and the arrival of the era of coalition politics were gradually eating into Pawar’s strength to sustain his loyalty to the party & its new leader Sonia Gandhi. His disillusionment with the party hit an all time high when he saw Sonia Gandhi emerging as the Prime Minister in 1999. This hurt his professional pride & political ego. He finally decided to quit Congress and form his own political outfit – Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – protesting against the ‘foreign origin’ issue. The big question which will always continue to haunt Pawar is: Did he lose his cool & step out to be stumped out of the prime ministerial race once and for all? “Beyond doubt Pawar has all the potential to be a prime minister, but he understands the ground realities and knows that his small political outfit is not enough to catapult him to the PM’s house,” Tariq Anwar, a close party colleague of Sharad Pawar told B&E.
Pawar has king like status in Baramati parliamentary constituency, which he has been tending since 1967. He has used his political clout to the hilt to convert this sleepy village into a town bubbling with economic & IT activities. However, Pawar’s problem is that he has been unable to create a mass base outside his state and this is one major reason that the stalwart’s political career has been in doldrums and prime minister’s chair continues to elude him, since advent of coalitions in Indian politics, and big names like Rao and Sonia have also been a barrier.
