Pragmatism wins the day for UPA, The onus of saving the government is on the UPA. If BJP could put off its Hindutva agenda for the sake of sustaining the NDA Government

Surprises never cease to happen in Indian politics. Just when mid-term elections were looming Manmohan Singh,Sonia Gandhi on the horizon due to a deadlock between Congress and Left parties on Indo-US nuclear deal, Congress did a U-turn, saying political stability was more important for the country than the nuke deal. “Ours is not a one-issue government”, declared UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while putting the deal on the backburner. Just a few days back, the Congress President Sonia Gandhi was all gung-ho about the 123 Agreement, she had even gone to the extent of announcing from a public platform that those opposing the deal were in fact enemies of development. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too had dared the Left parties to pull down the government.

But the Left refused to blink and was tireless in its campaign against the deal. “The onus of saving the government is on the UPA. If BJP could put off its Hindutva agenda for the sake of sustaining the NDA Government, why can’t Congress abandon Nuke deal”, CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, asked UPA’s chief negotiator and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee at crucial UPA-Left meeting on the eve of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohammad ElBardei’s Delhi visit. Within 24 hours, both Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister had mellowed down their stance, saving the government.

The change happened as UPA partners were reluctant to face a mid-term poll. They impressed upon the Congress leader that it was prudent to put the deal on hold for sometime than being accused of being incapable of running a coalition. With two more years to go before the next elections, a fall of government would tantamount to loss of credibility & unofficially debar the Congress from approaching the regional groups for forming future coalitions. And Congress can’t afford to jeopardise its future, merely to please George Bush.
