Evil in power

That too in a pious land of Saudi Arabia…

SAUDI ARABIA: POLITICSThe rule of kingdom is a bygone in 21st century. And for good, perhaps as kingdoms seldom created selfless kings .It has always been criticised for being unjust , unkind & authoritative. Surprisingly, the most pious land, Saudi Arabia, the birth place of Islam, is still shockingly backward, when it comes to political reforms. Power is confined to few people who are ruling the nation. The country has emerged among the wealthiest nations due to its vast reserve of oil but this has not transformed into prosperity for the mass. Stability & security of the region remains at the interest of the ruling family. But, how long can it go? The kingdom’s deliberate refusal to tolerate any opposition as well as democratic reforms is making Arabians discontent. People on demonstrations & protests are not hidden anymore. In 2003, reform minded groups consisting of Shiite representatives, businessmen, intellectuals handed over two petitions to Crown Prince Abdullah demanding war on corruption, independence of judiciary, equality of women and introduction of elections. Again, last year a group of Saudi citizens presented a petition with a completely different take, stating that they want the royal family to be constitutional monarchy & power be transferred to institutions elected by free & fair elections. The prince brazenly promised but when the day of reckoning came, he was recklessly absent. Again, reformists are invited to the royal residence in a seminar in Mecca. When they claimed reforms, high officials tried to divide them on sectarian ground.

However, nature’s rule can’t be denied – everything has an end. Journey has started. Talal Bin Abdul-Aziz, a half-brother of King Abdullah for the first time declared for a new political party to challenge those few holding power for seven decades. He demanded urgent release of reform activists. But, is it easy to get reforms? Not really perhaps, but not impossible if the world order, led by the US, pressurises for it, albeit of course, if it suits their purpose.

Thirty-nine years and counting, at Nestlé, he followed a localised strategy, allowing various regional units to raise production while shutting-down

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Tagged as a ‘lucid leader’, he stresses on substance over style. And for him, ‘discipline’ defines ultimate success...

PROFILE: PETER BRABECK, CEO, NESTLÉ SAHe was born during World War II and in the turbulent economic times that followed, his only playground remained the surrounding Alps.... And while many of his age around the world grew up on sweet music, the only sounds he would recall as an infant, are that of thundering bombshells.... But this infant christened ‘Peter Brabeck-Lethmathe’ survived through it all and today has managed to guide Nestlé through turbulent times to become one of the largest names in FMCG industry – its Mcap touching a gargantuan $179.9 billion (as on October 1, 2007), having grown by a mind-boggling 439.75% since he became Nestlé’s global CEO in 1997!

Brabeck, a master in six languages, joined Nestlé as an ice cream salesman in 1968 and thereon served on various regional posts in Africa & Latin America. Throughout his 39 years at Nestlé, he followed a localised strategy, allowing various regional units to raise production while shutting-down many factories & chopping-off 6,000 brands from Nestlé’s book, as he admits, “My actions may sound slow in Silicon Valley, but they are fast for a company with factories in more than 80 countries and products that are sold in every country in the world!” And indeed today, Nestlé’s share prices, which have appreciated by a heart-stopping 77% to touch $448.46 (as on September 28, 2007) over just the past half-a-decade testify that his indomitable, yet incremental approach to decision-making has worked magic!

Born on November 13, 1944 in Villach, Austria, Brabeck is married with three children. A graduate in Economics from the University of World Trade in Vienna, he joined Findus, a subsidiary of Nestlé in 1968. He was sent to Chile in 1972, where he met Castro, who also introduced him to cigars! Three years later, he was again sent to Chile – but this time as the Director of Marketing for Nestlé! Sure enough, he’d learnt (to climb) fast!

During Brabeck’s tenure as CEO, Nestlé closed 156 factories globally and added 183 new ones. He has constantly put more emphasis on Nestlé’s few highly profitable global brands – including Nescafé & Nestlé – which account for 70% of total sales. And all thanks to him, today, Nestlé is a behemoth with an annual turnover of $84.42 billion (during FY 2006) with improved proft margins of 12.99% during FY 2006 (as compared to just 9.5% in 1997). Brabeck is particularly known for his string of acquisitions – including the $10.3 billion takeover of Ralston Purina pet foods and Chef America, the leading maker of frozen snacks in the US for $2.6 billion in 2001, Delta Ice-cream S.A. for $290 million in January 2006 et al – shelling out more than $25 billion during the past decade. All these for him has been a challenge as he accepts, “Nestlé’s big challenge is that we had to learn how to get operational efficiency with a relatively complex business structure. But then, this is what I think real management is all about....” Re-structuring for the sake of cost-cuts have also been on top of his agenda as he got rid of less-profitable ventures such as Nestlé’s European frozen-food, tomato-processing and Italian-meats et al, and over the years saved upto $4 billion through a multifarious project known as GLOBE.

During his reign, many complained about Nestlés volatile stocks. When asked for a justification, Brabeck shot back, “If I had run the company based on opinion of financial analysts, it would already have been bankrupt!” Sure enough, he dared to tread on, where none dared to tread... but as he calls it a day in April 2008, none can deny that this World War II baby proved himself a true soldier & a ‘priceless’ Nestlé product... since the war and well into the next millennium!

Time to make a difference…

Revamping the present education system...

EDUCATION: REGULATIONEducation and poverty can never go hand in hand. Primacy of poverty invariably leads to deprivation from education & vice-versa. But hopefully, things might turn for better as the Planning Commission has decided to set up an authority to make loans, scholarships, fellowships affordable in higher education for all students. The Higher Education Loan Guarantee Authority (HELGA) proposed by the Prime Minister can make a significant difference in higher education. Though education loans have been tripled to Rs.14,214 crore, making it accessible to over 9 lakh students from only just over 3 lakh; dropouts, failures to complete courses kept plaguing the nation. There is a big variation in enrollment rates of poor and non-poor students in the country. According to the latest survey by UGC, Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) for poor in higher education is just 2.4% whereas, for non-poor the figure is 12.91%. By doubling junior research fellowships and lowering interest rates can bring significant changes. HELGA no doubt is an honest intention, the proper implementation of which can invariably make India more equipped for global competition. But that would be possible only if this proposition does not face an untimely death as faced by many other acts with noble intentions.

Shied & saved, Just a few days back, the Congress President Sonia Gandhi was all gung-ho about the 123 Agreement

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Pragmatism wins the day for UPA, The onus of saving the government is on the UPA. If BJP could put off its Hindutva agenda for the sake of sustaining the NDA Government

Surprises never cease to happen in Indian politics. Just when mid-term elections were looming Manmohan Singh,Sonia Gandhi on the horizon due to a deadlock between Congress and Left parties on Indo-US nuclear deal, Congress did a U-turn, saying political stability was more important for the country than the nuke deal. “Ours is not a one-issue government”, declared UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while putting the deal on the backburner. Just a few days back, the Congress President Sonia Gandhi was all gung-ho about the 123 Agreement, she had even gone to the extent of announcing from a public platform that those opposing the deal were in fact enemies of development. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too had dared the Left parties to pull down the government.

But the Left refused to blink and was tireless in its campaign against the deal. “The onus of saving the government is on the UPA. If BJP could put off its Hindutva agenda for the sake of sustaining the NDA Government, why can’t Congress abandon Nuke deal”, CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, asked UPA’s chief negotiator and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee at crucial UPA-Left meeting on the eve of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohammad ElBardei’s Delhi visit. Within 24 hours, both Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister had mellowed down their stance, saving the government.

The change happened as UPA partners were reluctant to face a mid-term poll. They impressed upon the Congress leader that it was prudent to put the deal on hold for sometime than being accused of being incapable of running a coalition. With two more years to go before the next elections, a fall of government would tantamount to loss of credibility & unofficially debar the Congress from approaching the regional groups for forming future coalitions. And Congress can’t afford to jeopardise its future, merely to please George Bush.

universalism of this declaration is based on the particular teachings of Christianity.

What’s Great About Him?
Dinesh D’SouzaHis defence of the US & Christianity

What’s so great about America ? It became the country that it did. What’s so great about Christianity? It shaped the core institutions and values of the US and the West. What’s so great about Dinesh D’Souza? He wrote books that answered the two questions. In a 2003 piece, he detailed some of the things that were right about America: it “provides an amazingly good life for the ordinary guy”, offers “more opportunity and social mobility than any other country,” “work and trade are respectable in America,” and that it has the “kindest, gentlest foreign policy of any great power in world history.” In another piece this year, he defended Christianity – the religion that gave this world modern science, and made leaders realise “the preciousness and equal worth of every human life.” He concluded by saying, “Consider finally modern notions of human rights – the right to freedom of conscience, or to property, or to marry and form a family… as enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The universalism of this declaration is based on the particular teachings of Christianity.” He’s a bit controversial too, as he believes that nations and societies are not equal, some are better than others.

The Indian policy makers too were forced to placate the superpower.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

America has been Bangalored, Bill has been Gated, and the sole superpower has been Bushed and Singhed.

India-specific slumberCoincidental circumstances in the late 1990s converged to create an environment that allowed Indians to partially control America’s policy-making process. Manmohanomics and P. Chidambaram’s dream budget in those days obviously shook the US out of its India-specific slumber. Suddenly, a huge market was opening out to its corporations. But still, the process of Indo-US bonding was somewhat flirtatious, more apprehensive, and it looked like the two would go through a long period of dating and wooing. The marriage seemed far, far away.

However, the catalyst that expedited the legalisation of the relationship came in 1998, when India – and subsequently Pakistan – blasted its way into the nuclear club. Economic sanctions by most developed nations, especially America, hung like a Damocles’ sword over India’s head. The Indian policy makers too were forced to placate the superpower. True, there was a sense of arrogance; the late Pramod Mahajan, a senior BJP leader, told journalists that if China could buy its way out of the Tiananmen Square massacre by placing huge orders for American goods (like Boeing aircraft), India could do the same.

At the same time, there was an urgency to engage with America, which led to several rounds of talks between the then Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh and Strobe Talbot. Since most of the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the US had either links with BJP’s ideological wings like the RSS, or believed in the Hindu way of life, the NDA government could mobilise the community to lobby for India’s interests. The Indian Americans suddenly found themselves neck-deep in a situation that they were never comfortable with. They became the informal lobbyists.

The Sugar Saheb!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The Maratha leader continues to survive & thrive in Indian politics, despite ill-health and altered political equations

PROFILE: SHARAD PAWARHaving secured the top job at the International Cricket Council (ICC), Sharadchandra Govindrao Pawar is back to his favourite sport, politics. With the mid term polls looming large on the horizon, Pawar is busy trying to convince the ruling coalition to refrain from making elections inevitable. Although, he fully supports the Indo-US nuclear deal, he considers the stability of UPA Government more important in the current scenario. Presently, Pawar is analysing the pitch – keeping all his options open – waiting for the coin to be tossed up. He will probably join the combination depending on the direction, in which the political winds are likely to blow. So the Congress, BJP & the Third Front will all vie to woo the veteran politician.

Much like the other Maratha legend Sachin Tendulkar, Sharad Pawar too had started his career at a young age and showed tremendous promise to perform at the highest level. He headed the State Youth Congress at 24; entered the State Cabinet at 29 & in 1978, when he was just 38, he created a record of sorts by becoming the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He continued to perform with élan on the political wicket & became the CM for the fourth time in March 1993. In 1991, when Congress regained power, he was one of the top contenders for the post of Prime Minster. However, he was pitted at the post by Narasimha Rao and had to contend with defence portfolio only. He came back with a vengeance to occupy the centre stage by becoming the Leader of the Congress Party in Lok Sabha. However, the fluctuating political fortunes of the Congress and the arrival of the era of coalition politics were gradually eating into Pawar’s strength to sustain his loyalty to the party & its new leader Sonia Gandhi. His disillusionment with the party hit an all time high when he saw Sonia Gandhi emerging as the Prime Minister in 1999. This hurt his professional pride & political ego. He finally decided to quit Congress and form his own political outfit – Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – protesting against the ‘foreign origin’ issue. The big question which will always continue to haunt Pawar is: Did he lose his cool & step out to be stumped out of the prime ministerial race once and for all? “Beyond doubt Pawar has all the potential to be a prime minister, but he understands the ground realities and knows that his small political outfit is not enough to catapult him to the PM’s house,” Tariq Anwar, a close party colleague of Sharad Pawar told B&E.

Pawar has king like status in Baramati parliamentary constituency, which he has been tending since 1967. He has used his political clout to the hilt to convert this sleepy village into a town bubbling with economic & IT activities. However, Pawar’s problem is that he has been unable to create a mass base outside his state and this is one major reason that the stalwart’s political career has been in doldrums and prime minister’s chair continues to elude him, since advent of coalitions in Indian politics, and big names like Rao and Sonia have also been a barrier.
