In a yet another survey conducted by consultancy firm Towers Perrin, it has been said that, “the economy is forcing companies to evaluate compensation and incentive plans.” The survey reveals that a quarter of the companies surveyed expect bonuses will drop more than 25% year over year across the board, while 36% believe that there will be a targeted reduction in head count. Narter opines, “Over the past 20 years the incomes of the top 1% have grown far faster than other segments. As certain firms need government bailouts, there will be strings attached... Other boards will question why management can command such high salaries as firms rack up losses.”
Perhaps the EES Act, 2008 and Obama-backed ‘Say-on-pay’ bill may put a ceiling on the amount of compensation that can be drawn by top executives and leaders. However, this isn''t the first time that the government has cried foul over compensation packages during a crisis period. Earlier too, the government and activists had raised concerns over the hefty pays executives drew.
