Subhiksha must adopt a franchise model, but first it needs money real fast!!!

No frills... no thrills... just mounting bills!

The no frills retailer has been known for offering low cost products to the consumer but for the past few months, Subhiksha has lost a lot of ground to competitors, as it hasn’t been able to lure the customers due to the shortage of supply. “We are in pain but we are not shutting down,” said R. Subramanian in a note sent to the media. Sources confirm that the retailer hasn’t given salaries to its employees since October and owes a hefty amount to them across the country. “There are arrears on salaries and payments – not because we do not want to pay, but because we can’t pay,” admits Subramanian. The company is also planning to cut sown on its stores by a hefty count of 100-150 from the currently operating 1,600. Subhiksha, was once considered to be an underdog emerged as a very strong player in the retail industry, but the company made the mistake of over reliance on debt. They have raised only around Rs.1.8 billion on shareholder funds and the Rs.40 billion turnover in 2008 was funded largely through debt. Their equity plans last year fell flat as a result of the crisis, making their aggressive expansion ill-timed.

To ensure that people don’t suffer from the transition, those who have analogue reception are to get converter boxes that allow them to get digital signals. In the second, it crashed and burned. Fans got to hear commentary along the lines of: “Well, it looks like the Digital TV Transition is going to have to be towed off the track.”

The first cut was when President Obama compared communism (read obliquely, ‘China’) with fascism and America’s hard struggle to fight against communists in his inaugural speech, saying, “Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions”; and the second was when Timothy Geithner, newly selected Treasury Secretary of Obama’s administration, made strong comments and accusations targeting China as the ‘currency manipulator’. Unfortunately, at a time when both countries desperately need to strengthen relations to work together amidst the deep unending crisis, this seems to have a very wrong signal ahead of them. Looking at the past, US has been soft on China. Even on the currency issue, Hank Paulson, former Treasury Secretary, despite making continuous visits to China, all but failed to send a strong message to China on revaluation.

B&E: How does the company view its role in India’s development vis-à-vis the ongoing oil, energy and power crisis?
LJ: As far as India’s growth is concerned, the biggest hurdle is infrastructure. If India wants to continue growing at 9% it needs the requisite infrastructure in roads, power, ports etc. Earlier, the government controlled infrastructure development. But it failed because it lacked the funds, the technical and marketing expertise and was plagued with corruption. Then it roped in the private sector. So now public-private partnership is becoming a reality in infrastructure. The private partner builds the road without charging anything from the government. They maintain the road, again without charging anything from the government. In return, the government and the private player share the revenue generated from the users of the road. The same also applies to other types of infrastructure projects like airports.

Yes, her personal fortune struck the billion dollar gong (with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia’s stock price rising by 90%) during her 5-months stint at West Virginia’s Federal Prison in 2004! So what about her? Well, in the past four years (since her release), she’s lost about 70% of her wealth; indeed, better behind bars! Take for instance, Ramalinga Raju, the founder of India’s 4th largest IT Services firm, Satyam Computers. Today, he is behind bars (pleading for a bailout), and is in ‘no way’ ammasing great personal wealth! Then there is the 3rd largest flag hoisted atop the Indian IT fort – Wipro, which was banned from dealing with the World Bank over allegations of “improper payments.”

B&E: Seymour Hersh argues that there has been a shift in the American position vis-à-vis an attack on Iran? What’re your comments on that? MM: From the very commencement of this question historically, two options were on the table: an alternative based on cooperation, and an option based on altercation. We, at all times, prefer the choice based on cooperation. Time and again, we would listen from some part of the ruling party in the United States that they are bearing in mind the other option – that is confrontation, an assault or military strike on Iran. Maybe this has forever been in their minds, and is even now; but the problem is that they aren’t understanding what could happen. They cannot inflict on the taxpayers another conflict and that’s why we do not see any likelihood for a new conflict by the Americans in our region.

B&E: What do you think would the consequences be, if the United States did attack Iran? MM: They know what will be the reaction. We have informed them.

Even that stature is in doubt, now that Ratan Tata has already sought special contingency funds in banks for ‘credit-worthy’ Indian companies to rescue them if the dollar and euro loans they have taken are recalled or have to be repaid in a hurry in the face of global financial meltdown. Don’t have to look far to know which companies he meant once we observe how Tata has recently sought a bailout for JLR and is finding the Corus acquisition too hard to digest! And such cases abound across sectors & companies. Consider some of the more prominent ones: • The case of Ramalinga Raju’s cooking of Satyam’s account books is known to all. The real estate company Maytas, which was led by his sons is an equally interesting case in point. Underhand dealings with the Andhra Pradesh state government are being scrutinised, which gave Maytas Infra so many key infrastructure projects in the state, despite Maytas having very little in terms of background experience in infrastructure development. Now, of course, the state government is looking to keep a safe distance from the tainted company.

Some time during 1998, the media went into a tizzy. For the unthinkable had happened. First, the Delhi Police raided the office and residence of the Group President of Reliance Industries Ltd. V. There were dark whispers that Baalu was in trouble because someone finally had the guts to nail him for getting access to the Union Budget even before it was presented to the Parliament. More than the raids, it was the political context of the time that had raised eyebrows across all and sundry. A government led by the BJP with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister was ruling India.

On September 15, 2008, Citi’s shares plunged by 15%, & on September 16, by another 7%, as news of Citi’s exposure to Lehman’s bankruptcy came to light. Lehman named Citigroup amongst its “largest unsecured creditors,” with a numbing $138 billion of Citigroup’s money tied up in unsecured Lehman bonds. Consider that Lehman’s gross outstanding debt is $613 billion dollars! So Citi is exposed to almost an unbelievable 23% of Lehman’s crash!

The no-brainer auto issue #1

Understanding the first is unbelievably simple! Fuel-efficient cars [in other words, cars that run on traditional petroleum and give increasing miles per gallon]! The reality is that companies that have focused less on providing high level quality (in terms of say, styling, driving, luxury, SUV experience) and more on providing flat fuel efficiency have succeeded beyond anybody’s expectations. The corollary is that companies that have focused on the opposite have tasted devastating billion dollar losses. It’s obvious that the solution was not something hidden away in strategic thingamajigs. And to say all this as an afterthought is, like I wrote above, a no-brainer. But in truth, the concept that fuel efficient cars are the future, was for every auto major across the world to see. Sadly, the only ones that focused on it with passion were the Japanese giants.

The entire media coverage of the latest meltdown is focused on the sub-prime crisis. There will be dozens of books on the latest crisis by the end of the year. Presidential candidates Obama and McCain will do their damned best to tar each other with the sub-prime scandal. More banks will collapse. Growth rates in China and India will inevitably ease off as the largest market in the world stumbles even more sharply before recovering. Pity no one talks about the real reason why capitalism is in coma in America – the shameful manner in which extreme right-wing ideology has economically disenfranchised a majority of Americans. As the Great depression President Herbert Hoover once said in a lighter moment, “Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt...”

Shivraj Chauhan and Raman Singh too were helped by the Congress party’s internecine struggles. In many cases Congress leaders were more interested in ensuring the defeat of their rivals than in protecting the party’s own interest. Raman Singh prevailed over a Congress visibly divided between V. C. Shukla, Moti Lal Vora and Ajit Jogi camps, simply on a pro-Salwa Judum (anti-naxalism) plank.

In Mizoram, people voted for a change, ending the 10-year rule of Mizo National Front (MNF) leader, Zoramthanga, handing over more than 3/4th majority to the Congress leader, Lalthanhawla. Zoramthanga is a close aide of former MNF chief, Laldenga, who ushered in democracy in Mizoram after a peace accord with Rajiv Gandhi in 1986. The former guerilla, facing charges of corruption & nepotism, led to the loss of the party. People’s verdict is unanimous – they want development, development & only development. One thing is clear that from now on polls will be contested on pro-incumbency & not anti-incumbency.

Feeling defeated by a series of failed approaches to the US

Rather than telling Japan that the US was determined to search for a diplomatic solution, America’s categorical reaction confirmed it to the Japanese as an arrogant & conceited enemy. Moreover, by transferring its Pacific Fleet from San Diego to Pearl Harbor, the US encouraged the Japanese understanding that the US fully anticipated war with Japan.

World War II in the Pacific finally came about for many different reasons. But it was the sense of encirclement and humiliation that united the deeply divided Japanese government. Feeling defeated by a series of failed approaches to the US, including an overture to hold direct talks with Roosevelt, PM, Fumimaro Konoe resigned on October 16, making hard-line Army Minister Hideki Tojo his successor.

The high-handed tone of the Hull Note of November 26, demanding Japan’s withdrawal of all its troops from China, was a final blow to the moderates in Japan’s government, who still hoped for diplomatic negotiations. By this time, many policy-makers were convinced that the US was not ready to hear them out.
