Destitution to development

In Common Wealth, the author Jeffrey D. Sachs, Professor of Sustainable Development at Columbia University and special advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the Millennium Development Goals, has elaborated upon some actions that are necessary to fulfil the hopes of generation in building a world of peace, sustainable development and Common Wealth.

These include learning about this generation’s challenges to become acquainted with the underlying science of sustainable development, travelling to see other places and cultures to understand the common interests and aspirations that unite all of us, starting or joining organisations committed to sustainable development i.e., Muhammad Yunus began Grameen Bank and gave life to the world-wide microfinance revolution, Paul Farmer started Partners In Health, Norman Borlaug helped to establish the wheat research institute CIMMYT and thereby helped feed the world, promoting sustainable development through social networking sites, getting politically engaged, demanding our politicians to honour government’s promises and donating time, dollars, and the energy to social networks.

Global survival in the long run will be achieved by recognising that the vast majority of people in the Middle East, China, India, and the rest of the world, just as in the United States, long for their own prosperity and security, not for domination over others. Our fears can easily get the best of us. We must therefore train ourselves and orient our policies to understand the world not only as we would see it but how others see it as well. That is the key to appreciating our common fate, and Common Wealth, on the planet.

Definitely, had the Reserve Bank not come to rescue, we would have seen many AMCs urging for bailouts. RBI and the government made temporary bridge finance to the tune of Rs.600 billion available for funding redemptions. They even made sure that corporate deposits of all banks are honoured as collateral for getting funds from this source. For the time being, such moves might have helped the AMCs survive the acute redemption pressure, but they must remember that it’s just ‘temporary’.

The problems still exist in the very base of the industry as Amir Ullah Khan, Director, India Development Foundation, avers, “The debt market is shallow, not completely understood and not mature yet.” The current disaster must be turned into a blessing that allowed the industry to remove all bottlenecks to avoid any such crisis in future. Else next time when a similar disaster strikes, it may take the whole industry down with it. However, for the current crisis, Rajesh Sharma, Fund manager, Escorts MF strongly believes that “No other Mutual fund will see such a fate (of Lotus),” Gupta feels, “No major structural change is expected to happen.” And if he is proved wrong, it’s no child’s play to guess what’s next.

Being son of the world’s richest man hasn’t influenced this easy going personality from his passion of farming. Even the slightest of the possibility of becoming the next CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, doesn’t keep Howard Graham Buffett away from driving his tractor across his 850 acre corn and soybean farm in central Illinois. Named after Warren’s father Howard, a US Congressman and Warren’s teacher and mentor Benjamin Graham, this 53-year-old son of Buffett is the only son to serve on Berkshire Hathaway’s board of directors. His father has even tapped him to be Berkshire’s next chairman when the time comes. So what makes him say so?

Having a diverse curriculum vitae is what makes Howard the most likely contender to be the next spearhead of Berkshire Hathaway. Having served on corporate boards of Coca-Cola, ConAgra’s Foods, and Archer Daniels Midland, Howard has shown enough business talent to make Dad proud. “It’s just being honest with people. I mean that sounds pretty simple, but I think what I watched him do is be very straightforward and very upfront and give honest answers and treat people fairly,” is how Howard explains his father’s philosophy.

If you can beat the market, you’re either plain lucky or a liar... or Buffett. This suggestedly vicarious saying has been a favourite squeeze of umpteen shows on Broadway, which assuage to presumably being of the, um, intellectual variety that the suited partisan clan partakes of. And one doesn’t need to see the late night west coast rerun of Squawk Box on NY1 to understand why. Buffett has beaten the market beyond expectations for too long now [as per our statistics, now for over 43 years!]. He has made his investors richer by unbelievable percentages since the day he took over the reigns of his company, Berkshire Hathaway. This comparison might come your way in any eulogy on Warren you might read, so we decided to spin it up anyway. Way back in 1965, when Warren was just 35 – and neither of us was born – if we had decided to invest $1 in his firm, today, we would have been worth $400,863. On the contrary, an S&P 500 investment would have fetched us unborn-again- believers just $6,840!

Well, with airlines cutting employees off their rolls, the worst seems to be just round the corner for now. Then with market shares of the LCCs falling from 70% in January 2007 to 47% in January 2008 and further to 41% in September 2008, the story line doesn’t read a very happy ending. Worse, the fall in average passenger load factor from 70% to 54% also pronounced doom for the LCCs. And while FSCs cumulatively saw a drop of just 13% in sales revenues in September 2008 as compared to August 2008, the LCCs saw a murderous 37% drop! Guess, even recession is trying to tell us the victor from the vanquished. In times of distress even the FSCs are trying their level best to stay afloat. The stock market is cruel and the market is falling with every growing week... And perhaps, five years ago, Gopinath had never dreamt of this day, when all that would be left in the name of Air Deccan and LCCs would be tattered pages from aviation history. Yes, their tribe came, they saw, and they were conquered! And that was the closing line (in this write-up).

In America, Germany the brand is very popular and enjoys a key position but in countries like Indonesia, not only Dettol but also Reckitt Benckiser really has had a tough time. Over all, in the 60 countries that we operate in, we hold a substantial position of the market across the various segments we operate.

It’s platinum jubilee for the brand Dettol. Where would we see it in its diamond jubilee?
Clearly Dettol will be established as an iconic personal care brand and more associated with lifestyle. Though, as of now the future is difficult to predict, but we can say that the contribution from Dettol in India to the global turnover will definitely be higher. We might even rope in some brand ambassadors to help us accomplish this task. In its diamond jubilee Dettol would certainly be present across various other potential segments.

Will the global downturn affect the FMCG industry too?
As of now it hasn’t affected much but if the recession continues, specially for US-based companies, it will affect the sector severely.

Let us begin by identifying the binding constraints. In my judgment, the most important ones come under the category of “inadequate infrastructure.” I mean not just physical infrastructure such as transportation, communication, and power supply, but also, and perhaps more importantly, institutional and organisational infrastructure, especially the mechanisms for regulation and for contract enforcement.

The reforms that Dr. Manmohan Singh launched in 1991 have done much to simplify the maze of regulations and licensing that stifled entrepreneurship, but the job is only half done. India rates only around the 50th percentile of the 2007 World Bank rankings on the dimensions of government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption. In the bank’s latest survey of business environment, almost 60% of those questioned rated corruption as a major or moderate obstacle; the corresponding number for the functioning of the judiciary was about 30% and that for taxes and regulation, 40%. India ranks only 48th among 131 countries on the World Economic Forum’s competitiveness index. This is not good enough for a would-be economic superpower. That’s why BJP has already announced Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra as their candidate for CM. On the third side, BSP supremo, Mayawati has made Brahm Singh Bidhuri as the new state president and has entrusted the responsibilty of make election strategies on the shoulders of Nasimuddin Siddiqui.

Every leader wants more and more of his people to get tickets. And for the same all parties are facing trouble. They have to face opposition as well as unhappy people within the party. It makes them weak and that’s what is happening now. If candidates are selected on the basis of ability and performance, many names would get cut. A dilemma each party faces.

With spiralling divorce cases, weekend parenting is fast catching on!

As we live each day, time seems ordinary but becomes priceless once it has passed by. And, who would know it better than a father who ends up becoming a weekend visitor to his kids after separating with his spouse?

While it is possible that the wedding vows turn into sour wedding woes, the absence of the children one swears by may change people and their perspective towards life entirely. “I had moved out of the house and even the city before filing for separation. It was obvious for my two teenager sons to stay in the house with their mother. I used to meet them during holidays and weekends once in a while but most of the times I tried to stay in touch with them through letters. We always shared a great rapport, but the bond strengthened even more after this incident. I realised that my kids needed me and I couldn’t live without them. Compromising wasn’t easy but for the sake of our children, we didn’t proceed further with our plea for separation and got back together,” reminisces 56-year-old Mr. Kapur (name changed) about what happened some nine years back.

Well, overcoming grudges and ego for the good of kids might seem to be the most appropriate solution to a crumbling marriage; it surely can’t be applied to all relationships for they vary in complexity. So, the fact of the matter is – love does fall short and people do walk out.

B&E investigates into whether GE can rise again!

Equity investors trembling all around; Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and AIG receiving Fed bailouts; the American economy spiralling downhill; and most importantly, Warren Buffet announcing his $3 billion interest in the company – do these signal troubles for the ‘unsinkable GE’ ship? It’s time for Jeff Immelt to show some heroism says B&E’s gyanendra kashyap... Can he?

Jeff Immelt’s kingdom is much like the American economy – diversified. Flying engines & light bulbs to healthcare; oil & infrastructure to NBC Universal studios, this $199 billion worth NYSE giant is just too hard to miss in any sector imaginable! So what ails this omnipresent conglomerate? Is it the one billion short of the $200 billion M-Cap figure that is taunting it day-in-and-day-out, or is it more about the $200 billion in shareholder value that has been chiselled-off in the past year that has got Immelt biting his nails (for the record, the GE stock lost a tantalising $47 billion on a single Black Friday – April 11, 2008)?

So why did GE need a capital infusion of $14 billion in such an urgent fashion, out of which $3 billion was taken from Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway at an annual interest rate of 10% which would be paid out from after-tax profits (therefore criticised as its most expensive loan ever) and in lieu of issuance of preferential shares to Berkshire. So was it the current downturn the same enemy that brought GE down to its knees? And isn’t GE an ‘industrial giant’ with minimal exposure to the subprime meltdown?

He sees his Bolivarian revolution as intended to supersede US power in the region, and to encourage a mental picture for the region that is incredibly diverse from the US vision.” And why is Chavez so successful? Helle C. Dale, Director of the Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy Studies, The Heritage Foundation, deliberates to B&E, “Like Marti, Bolivar, and Castro, Hugo Chavez aspires to defy US sway in Latin America by bonding the region beneath one socialist system.”

Francis Fukuyama, Expert at School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, adds to that, “Chavez has good basis to believe [Leftism] will work since, first, there is a lot of societal dissatisfaction in Latin America that he addresses to, and second, he has cash from oil.” Then post the George Bush era, will not the American intent and discontentment with anti-capitalism forces in the continent wane away? Gerard Alexander, Associate Professor at the Department of Politics in University of Virginia disagrees, “I believe that feelings like these remain strong even after Bush leaves office. The feelings have waxed and waned but existed for decades, and they will not lightly disappear when either Obama or McCain continues.”

All in all, to say that the current political crisis is the cusp of an oncoming revolution against the Left, could be close to being labelled idiotic. For the fact is that the Leftist revolution in South America has not attempted to install dictatorships. Rather, the revolutions have tried – and brilliantly succeeded – to ride on a democratic system, incestuously testing capitalism, yet bringing in a socialist bent to the chief political ideology, believing in the fact that it is not pure capitalism that can help the underprivileged masses at large, but socialist liberalised policies that finally ensure that economic development directly reaches the bottom 80% in one shot than through the traditional trickle down method. Till the time the ideology remains this, Hugo and Evo Morales would continue to symbolise the Bolivaran revolution like super heroes.
