Jittery over job losses!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Desperate times call for desperate measures. The global financial imbroglio’s next casualty is the job market, as corporates across the globe are scaling down their operations and downsizing their workforce

The sight of 1,900 stranded Jet employees, most of them still in their early 20s, shocked the nation, ensconced in the semblance of safety from the global turmoil. Although they were reinstated later, the event was the omen of bad times to come, just raring to knock at the Indian shores. Global recession is a reality and it is here to stay or at least until it makes us feel miserable by the kind of insecurity it brings in our lives. Even though India Inc. has not (in the real sense) been affected by this evil phenomenon as have its global cousins, jobs here are still at stake.

With all the talk about India's rising power status, burgeoning foreign reserves and a multi-faceted industry, thc country still remains, in reality, a fledgling economy fighting all odds amidst the predators of sub prime and oil crises (even though the global oil prices have plunged). The fact remains that this country has to take care of its already 9 per cent unemployed population as well as the additional burden of the 12 million people, who join the work force every year. Given the higher than ever correlation in the global economic system, effects are slowly but steadily percolating into India as well. The first signs of this gloomy situation are already too evident to hide and the question remains, who's next?

Since multi-national corporations are affected more severely than Indian companies, naturally their operations here are the first to get hit. To start the mayhem, Motorola will sack an unspecified number from its operations in India. The axing is part of the overall 3,000 job (five per cent of total workforce) cut exercise by the mobile phone major It expects to save close to $750 to 800 million eventually. The American telecom giant has been suffering from heavy losses, especially in the highly competitive, low-margin mobile phone business.

The good old doc's advice

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Some things are forever, and Keynes' theories fall in that category...

It’s not for the first time that the world is experiencing an economic turmoil or global meltdown. This phenomenon (or to be precise, recession) has affected almost all economies and financial institutions. What started with the US financial crisis has now engulfed almost all the countries of Europe and also Asian giants like Japan. Most of the economies are planning some or the other kind of bailout plan or stimulus package to get rid of this on-going recession. The most prominent steps were taken by big economies like the United States, Japan, European Union (EU) and China. To counter this recession, US launched a $700 billion bailout package, followed by Germany with a $29 billion stimulus package, Japan with a $275 billion package and China announcing a $600 billion stimulus package (the biggest package as percent of GDP).

Consider this: USA's bailout plan is aimed at providing its people with tax rebates ($600 to individuals and $1,200 to couples) and bailing out financial institutions / banks experiencing steep problems. Japan's stimulus package is designed to help and increase savings of small business and families. Germany has its own plan that includes tax breaks on purchase of cars, credit facilities to small and mid-size businesses and investment in infrastructural development. China framed its stimulus package aimed at increasing consumer spending, developing infrastructure and thus generating employment. All of the above plans look quite similar and the bottom line remains common in all the above mention cases i.e. to refurbish their respective economic growth. This is not a mere coincidence but an intelligently devised plan based on an age-old time tested theory. These stimulus packages are largely based on Keynesian theory (that advocates more of government spending, low interest rates, easy credit / money policy). Recently, G7 in Washington discussed a framework to tackle recession based on Keynes’ theories. And even the British bailout plan was largely devised on Keynes’ economic theory. A great economist in the 20th century, John Maynard Keynes in his book titled 'The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money", had already described such situations and given feasible solutions as well. His theory has also helped many big economies to come out of recession in the past as well. Keynes' theory helped the world in 1929 during the Great Depression (US President Roosevelt invested in farm subsidies and public works to stabilise the economy).

The most noteworthy point is that as economies get integrated (through globalisation), recession in one economy will hamper other economies as well (China's export, India's IT sector et al) and, obviously, a well devised stimulus package will also benefit many other countries too. In this modern era, when economists are busy drafting new and contemporary theories, the Keynesian economic theory still has its own place and is still relevant in modern times.

Even NATO is shying away from attacking pirates

The government of India may have triumphed and brought home its boys, the sailors from the pirated Japanese ship MV Stolt Valor, but there’s little to celebrate, as yet another Yemeni ship was hijacked on November 25, infuriating the world. In fact, the bigger challenge at present is to rescue ships like MV Fiana, a Ukrainian vessel carrying 33 combat tanks and Sirius Star, Saudi Arabian supertanker carrying over two million barrels of oil which is worth over $100 million. Astoundingly, nearly 17 ships are being held to ransom in the region at present.

No one knows where these pirates get their support from. However, the US has ruled out any al-Qaeda support to these pirates. US Army Gen William "Kip" Ward said the chaos on the high seas is a reflection of the country's political chaos. Somalia has had no functioning government since 1991. And due to all this, pirate attacks off the Somalian coast in recent years have increased. This year captures have crossed the 100 mark, with 40 ships still under hijack. Even a warning from the Islamic Courts Union of Somalia, which asked them to leave Harardhere, the Somalian town where the ship is currently anchored, failed to get results. Sirius Star belongs to an Arab nation, and piracy is a capital offence under Islam, but even this doesn’t scare them. So when Sheikh Abdulaahi Osman, a commander of the group in Harardhere warned them by saying, “Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country and it is very serious crime to hold Muslim property. Those holding the ship must free it or face armed intervention." The pirates responded by cutting their ransom demand. Abdi Salan Ahmed, who claimed to represent the pirates, said: “There may be some type of ransom reduction but I can’t confirm it now.” In Malaysia, on November 24, an international association of tanker owners' called for a military blockade along the coast of Somalia,, NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said that the alliance is not considering such a move. Remarkably, noted author Gwynne Dyers has lamented that so far, “with the honourable exception of the Indians and the French, nobody has used force against the pirates of the Horn”.

terrorists demonstrated in Mumbai on the night of November 26 that when it came to chutzpah, they are way ahead of the country’s strategic community.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

They demonstrated that they could organise a late evening slaughter of more than 100 people, including Mumbai police’s three top anti-terror triggers, and maim and injure nearly 300 people in an attack which has no parallel since 9/11 and traumatic by Mumbai’s history of terrorist violence.

The utter confusion, cussedness and lack of initiative, both in Delhi and Mumbai, was a sight to behold. Union home Minister Shivraj Patil’s summary of the biggest terror attack on Indian soil could well have been a description of the daily weather. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called for a meeting of the Union Cabinet, where all that he offered was that "the security apparatus has been pressed into service to deal with the situation” – in the light of the continuing hostage standoff and the terror which had enveloped Mumbai, these two could be the understatements of the year. Significantly, earlier this week, Prime Minister had sent India’s National Security Advisor, M.K. Narayanan, to meet with BJP leader, L.K. Advani, to discuss the issue of harder terror laws. While Advani insisted that a POTA-like law was required to counter terror, Narayanan felt that current laws were sufficient. Well placed sources say that after the latest attacks, the government is veering around to the view that a tougher law may be the requirement of the day and the Ministry of Home Affairs has been put on the ball to concretise the subject. Interestingly, the PM has also ordered a report card from all the ministries, and the worst performing ministry is, as expected, Shivraj Patil’s Union Home Ministry. Clearly, if Barack Obama and John Mccain have shown that there is consensus on fighting terror, why should India's political worthies lag behind?

Are bonobos more vulnerable than chimpanzees?

Bonobos are more endangered not because of the differences in behaviour and social organisation between them and chimpanzees, but because they exist in smaller populations across an increasingly fragmented landscape. Bonobos also live only in the DRC, which is severely affected by civil war and currently lacks capacity for effective conservation.

Is there a possibility of still undiscovered ape species?

In 2005 in Tanzania, Rungwecubus kipunji, a totally new genus of primate, was discovered in the Southern Highlands and Udzungwa mountains, and in 2004, a new primate macaque (Macaca munzala) was described in Arunachal Pradesh (India).

Lion Man of Africa, Gareth Patterson, explores what makes animals indispensable totem symbols in our lives...

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

With Joy’s words in mind, it is not mere coincidence that today the most watched (and most loved) Internet video clip on the planet is that of the reunion of Christian the Lion with his human ‘parents’, an amazing example of real love across the so-called ‘species barrier’. This YouTube phenomenon has stirred the hearts of millions of people worldwide. Bought as a cub from a London store by two young Australian men, John Rendall and Ace Bourke, Christian was destined to be taken to Kenya, and to be rehabilitated back into the wilds by the grand old lion man himself, George Adamson. Christian loved his initial carers, John and Ace, and the men reciprocated this love abundantly.

Many months after Christian was taken to Kenya, John and Ace visited George with the hope of seeing Christian. Christian by this time had grown immensely, and roamed the wilds in the company of two young lionesses.

The film footage of the reunion between Christian and the two men is incredibly stirring. Christian strides slowly and watchful, down a granite outcrop. Suddenly his facial features transforms from caution to complete openness, and he runs towards Ace and John. Then an astonishing greeting ceremony takes place with Christian repeatedly leaping up, embracing the men with his paws, and rubbing his head against theirs. In the past few months this 35-year old film footage has spread like wild fire across the globe, with some sixteen million people viewing it on YouTube. In every continent, TV news stations and talk shows have featured the Christian the lion video clip. Sony Pictures, reportedly, are set to make a feature film on Christian’s story. Young and old, rich and poor, people of all races and religions, have all overwhelmingly reacted with emotion and positivity to the reunion of a lion and his human friends. Tears of joy have been shed by millions of eyes. Why was this?

Part of the answer I believe, is that we are responding to our age-old and deeply embedded connection with nature. In many ways, we had become lonely for that connection. Another part of the answer is simply love. What is love? This has been described as one of the most difficult questions for humanity and cannot be answered by the dictionary definition of ‘a great liking or affection.’ No, true love is the unconditional kind. The wanting of only the very best for another. That was the love of the lion and the men. And that, in part, is why we wept.

Astro-psephology: who will win?

IIPM Ranked No1 B-School in India

Starting with 1998 elections, psephologists, and what can arguably be termed ‘swingologists’, who changed their predictions hourly as reports of vote counting came in, looking at a swing here or a curve there, have all failed. So have the exit polls. Not just that, each exit poll (depending on which news media house was doing it, may be) contradicted the other, all going wild and none scoring a point, let alone the bull’s eye. The classic example of exit poll malfunction was in 2004, when most polls gave Bharatiya Janata Party a sweep. Congress romped home in a coalition instead. Recent times has seen politicos increasingly looking up to the galaxies and their readers for predicting their futures. So TSI decided to give it a go. Here are some astrological predictions from famous fate readers, each contradicting the other, many contradicting themselves too! And let’s wait till the results to check out which wins: psephology or astrology...

Obama- agent of change!

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

Arindam Chaudhuri is right to state that there is no leader after Nehru who has vision and ability to inspire people. The leaders we have now are concerned about themselves and their political party and are not interested in the welfare of people. I too have read “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, when I was in school and the book made me cry. The power of Stowe’s pen inspired Abraham Lincoln to take strong measures to abolish slavery in the U.S. But the whites discriminated black people for long time ; even after the abolition of slavery. In this context, November 4, 2008 is a historic day. It is the greatest day of our lifetime. Obama is not only a great revolutionary leader but a great revolution has taken place under his leadership. The white people who have contributed to Obama’s victory have virtually apologised for their forefathers deeds and now they feel better after electing him as a president. The people across the globe expect his leadership to create a better world.
