NORTHERN IRELAND UDA will have to prove their peaceful intentions through actions

The Northern Ireland’s largest loyalist paramilitary force – Ulster Freedom Fighters, announced that it will put its weapons aside, another step toward ending the continuing low level violence that has plagued the region despite the election of a power sharing government earlier this year. In a statement timed to coincide with a holiday commemorating war victims across Britain, the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) said, “We believe that the war is over, and we are now in a new democratic dispensation that will lead to permanent political stability.” The terror group indicated that it would “put arms beyond use”, without giving up its arsenal. The UDA also called on anyone in loyalist areas with information on drug dealing to contact the police. Meanwhile, the other main loyalist terror group, the Ulster Volunteer Force, has said it will seal arms away. Experts, however remain sceptical: “Only lip service won’t do. They will have to come up with something concrete to resolve the issue once and forever,” Prof. Paul Bew, Northern Ireland conflict expert & chief negotiator of the peace deal, told B&E.

The once powerful UDA was responsible for scores of shooting, bombings & other attacks, aimed mainly at Roman Catholics, & Protestant opponents during the 1970s & 1980s. It reached a membership of up to 40,000 but in recent years has dwindled to about 2,000 to 3,000 members. The IRA’s decision to decommission weapons allowed it to join loyalist advocates of Union with Britain in the new government in May.

doctors Courts teach British Government to respect human rights & grant equal status to non-EU medics

Thousands of doctors of Indian origin working in United Kingdom got a big Diwali gift, when the British High Court of Justice declared the government’s 2006 - visa policy to be “discriminatory & unlawful.” Earlier in March 2006, the Home Office had made it mandatory for the non-EU medics wishing to obtain a training grade job with the National Health Service (NHS) trust to obtain a work permit after the expiry of the four-year-long Highly Skilled Manpower Power (HSMP) visa. This ran contrary to the earlier promises made by the Home Office, which had told the HSMP visa holders that they were free to accept any employment, howsoever long it lasts. Speaking in defence of the discriminatory immigration policy, the spokesperson of the UK’s Department of Health is reported to have said that “the issue is not whether they (HSMP medics) can continue to work as NHS doctors-which they can-but whether the tax payers should be investing in training them instead of UK medical graduates.”

The British have every right to save the tax payers’ money but they don’t have a right to “undervalue the contribution made by doctors from abroad for decades,” argues the British Association of Physician of Indian Origin (BAPIO). After all, the trained non-EU doctors had invested their savings to build a career in the UK. Now, if midway through their professional journey, they are told to go merely because the supply of medics from the EU countries has increased, one can only say that such a policy is grossly unfair. That the British High Court has rectified an egregious folly of the government only goes to prove that the nimble political class in Britain is incapable of making judicious policy decisions. Supporting the landmark judgment, Dr. Raman Lakshman, Vice Chair for Policy for BAPIO told B&E, “We are delighted, this will reduce stress among tens of thousands of doctors who are providing excellent care every day within the NHS. This judgment means that these medical graduates can continue to be treated on merit in any recruitment process.”

The major question is, why did the government take such a step, when the British Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) August 2007 report had demanded that the affected migrants no longer be left in the lurch. Even Britain’s race relations watchdog, had warned the government of its failure to “fully comply with the requirements of the Race Equality Duty” with regards to HSMP workforce. The British establishment needs to learn one basic fact – if you want NHS to provide satisfying service to your population, develop a sound policy for the doctors whom you have invited to serve you in your time of need.

 Praful Patel #. Praful Patel

As Aviation Minister, he’s given many airlines a smoother runway over the last year. Airport modernisation may be the last air-pocket though

NCP General Secretary, Devi Prasad Tripathi, on Patel’s flight “As the name suggests, Praful Patel is really (‘Praful’) delightful. He is an extremely organised person who is totally focussed on his work. His target oriented personality has both a modern and a forward outlook. And the way he addresses even the most difficult of issues and finds their solution is indeed commendable. Praful, who believes in transparency is always at ease with both the mass and the class. It was under his stewardship that the Indian aviation sector has seen a metamorphosis in the last couple of years; something never seen before. His policies and decisions have led to phenomenal growth in the Indian aviation industry; so much so that even foreign players now want to invest in it.”

Narayana Murthy #. Narayana Murthy

Commonly referred to as Karnataka’s jewel, Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy is much more than that. Recipient of the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, Murthy is no less than a living legend for millions of budding entrepreneurs across the world

Giri Balasubramaniam, CEO of Greycaps India on Murthynomics

“What strikes you about Mr. Murthy is his humility and simplicity. What was once a way of life in India is today a virtue. Many youngsters confuse success as synonymous with flashy lifestyles. Humility and simplicity are pillars that stand by you, more so when troubled times embrace us. As an entrepreneur, if your ideas are strong and you are determined to pursue excellence while adding value to your customer, you don’t need a godfather or a hefty bank balance to take on the world. This is what Mr.Murthy has proved.

Response to situations is also a critical factor for his success. Mr. Murthy’s legacy is a lesson on how we need to learn the art of managing different and difficult situations. If you look closely at the incidents that shaped his life, he did nothing dramatic or stunning except that he developed an uncanny knack of understanding, absorbing, introspecting, analysing and responding appropriately to challenges and situations. It is this response that made him a victor amongst the wise. The world has never looked at Mr. Murthy or written about him as an economist. I believe he is one and a good one at that. He has shown this nation that the solution to rid society of poverty is by way of vast job creation. His approach to better economics underlines the pursuit of meritocracy and the extraordinary equity that value maximisation brings to the table.

And while he has always advocated the importance of speed, his vision and thoughts have always been long term. So what we need along with the speed of a sprinter is the stamina of marathon runner to be successful in this world.”

End of Yash Raj’s Tashan

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

India is awash with quite normal movie-goers who can rant off line after line and scene after scene from these classics that define Indian cinema’s defining moments.

They were supposed to be the emperors of Bollywood. But with 80% of their movies over the last two years failing to meet audiences’ expectations and being clearly sub-standard, and 70% flopping miserably, are we finally seeing the end of the monopoly called Yash Raj Films? Or is it that with their coming of age, Indian audiences simply feel insulted with the YRF/Karan Johar brand of ‘big-budget, zero-novelty no-brainers? pallavi srivastava of 4Ps B&M investigates...

“Happy toh lots you be today. Lots happy. Because the person jo aaj tak tumhaare mandir ke steps not chadding...that person tumhaare samne standing is... Because mein loosing but you knowing because I standing here that lady... that lady whose pairs rubbing your stone, so much rubbing that stone sala becoming 10%...” If this sounded utterly crass (and a horrible beginning to this article) imagine the consternation of audiences, who were exposed to hours of this balderdash spouted by protagonist Anil Kapoor in Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) latest release, Tashan! Ironically, the essence of this argument seems to have spread to most of the films coming out of the Yash Raj stable, what with a huge majority of movies (8 out of 10 films since December 2005) from YRF either spank low on quality import or (sans Fanaa) killingly high on losses as well.

Let’s be honest. Wasn’t this the same production house that gave us historically sparkling time-stoppers like Kabhi Kabhie, Silsila, Vijay, Mashaal, Lamhe, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge...? India is awash with quite normal movie-goers who can rant off line after line and scene after scene from these classics that define Indian cinema’s defining moments. Look at the recent past. While the Indian tinsel town has been painted green due to mind boggling revenues of around Rs.100 billion for the year 2007 (the figures don’t include overseas revenues), the iconic YRF had to be content with a petty share of less than a billion rupees of this total pie.

Sample this: Yash Raj made five films in 2007, out of which just one was successful (Chak De). The total production cost of YRF (read expenditure) in 2007 was a whopping Rs 1.18 billion (estimated); and the combined ‘grossings’ (read revenues) were Rs 0.9 billion. YRF actually made losses to the tune of Rs 25 million in the past year. All their last ten films had the biggest of stars – Saif, Akshay, Rani, Kareena, Aamir, Kajol, John, Abhishek, Priety, Madhuri, Abhishek, Amitabh; and of course SRK, Hrithik and Ash (who acted in the only two acclaimed as well as successful films in the list). The films had terrific packaging and marketing and had lovely names – Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag, Aaja Nachle, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Tara Rum Pum... So what’s the basic problem?

At a time when the economy is at an all time boom, the entertainment industry is growing at an impressive 17%, when the film industry has a CAGR of 14% and the industry veterans are claiming that this run is the golden era for the showbiz business; one of the oldest and most respected brands of the Indian film industry is into the red. And that too at a time when many international studios like Sony Pictures, Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures et al themselves are betting big on Bollywood. Is this a harbinger of a clearly misplaced and lackadaisical approach by YRF towards changing audience preferences? 4Ps B&M probes further...

Mukesh’s retail dreams have been snubbed during the past year. Will he stage a comeback?

Bounce back to glory

When we spoke to Reliance officials, they too confirmed that Reliance petrol pumps were “not feasible as Reliance has a consolidated business.” Therefore, as RPL feels, it made perfect strategic sense for Reliance to bow out of the petrol retailing game. However, it’s not really all goodbye for RPL’s dreams yet as some industry experts believe that its Jamnagar refinery (scheduled to open in September 2008) would soon end bad days for rpl and might even prompt it to make a comeback on the retail front. However Rohit Nagraj, Oil Analyst, Angel Broking has a different viewpoint, “The plant will not be a great help. Moreover with high retail price for petrol here to stay, an incompetitve market is no place for RPL. So, moving out was a great option and they should not think of coming back...” Where almost all entry strategies in retail have failed there’s just one thing that can help it bounce back – innovation! So is the company oblivious of this truth? Well, not really as Bijou Kurien, President & CEO, Lifestyle Reliance Retail expresses, “It is just a starting point and you can expect many more formats in the retail sector from the company.” ‘If not in India, then why not elsewhere?’ is also what you might be wondering. Well for the uninitiated, the company is exploring opportunities on foreign soil in the near future.

Then there is also realisation from the company’s end that middlemen (something that Reliance were planning to get rid of with time) are indispensable in the face of growing competition - learning from its mistakes as you might count it as. Lastly, the company is also belligerent about its hypermarkets, the count of which is forecasted to touch a massive 500 by December 2010. Till date the company has three hypermarkets (one each in Ahmedabad, Jamnagar & Tirupati) & plans to open two more in Hyderabad & Bangalore shortly.

Surely, Mukesh is down but not out and his dreams? Well, his vision spans far beyond just petrol and fresh vegetables; and most importantly, he never runs out of ‘fresh’ ideas!
